ASTM A312 / ASME SA312: This is the core reference standard for seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.

Seamless vs. Welded 316Ln Processes

Seamless (SMLS): Produced via hot-piercing followed by precision cold-drawing or pilgering.
SMLS contains no longitudinal weld lines, resulting in uniform microstructures. This makes it the preferred selection for ultra-high-pressure applications, hazardous gas transport, and nuclear primary loops.
Welded: Formed from flat-rolled strip stock and automatically joined via gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or laser welding. Welded pipes are a cost-effective option for large-diameter low-to-medium pressure lines, provided they undergo rigorous non-destructive evaluation (NDE) such as radiography or eddy-current testing.

Resisting Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

In industries operating warm, chloride-bearing process fluids under high internal pressures, standard austenitic steels can experience Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (CSCC).

While 316Ln is not completely immune to CSCC like more expensive duplex or nickel-base alloys, its higher yield strength and the lattice-stabilizing effect of nitrogen slow down crack initiation and propagation. This provides a wider window of safety during temperature and pressure spikes.
