Hastelloy steel pipe Types and Grades

Depending on the chemical composition of the Hastelloy material, there are various grades of Hastelloy. Common Hastelloy metal grades are:

01/

B-Type Alloys
Hastelloy B-type superalloys have a high percentage of nickel and molybdenum. B-grade Hastelloy is known for withstanding extremely reducing environments.
● B-2 Alloy (UNS N10665): B-2 Hastelloy material contains 65% nickel and 30% molybdenum. It also has a small percentage of carbon, iron, silicon, chromium, cobalt, manganese, and sulfur. B-grade alloy provides superior corrosion resistance to hydrochloric acids but is poor for oxidizing agents.

02/

C-Type Alloys
Hastelloy of this grade contains a high percentage of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. Chromium increases high-temperature properties and resistance against reducing environments. Hastelloy C grades are suitable for cold and hot working. Grade C Hastelloy metal is the most widely used Hastelloy material.
● C-22 Hastelloy (UNS N06022): C-22 Hastelloy consists of 58% nickel, 20% chromium, 13% molybdenum, 3.5% tungsten, 2.5% cobalt, and traces of other elements.

03/

G-Type Alloys
Suitable for welding using TIG, SAW, SMAW, and G-type Hastelloy materials contain tungsten as one of the alloying elements.
● G-30 Hastelloy (UNS N06030): It consists of 43% nickel, 30% chromium, 15% iron, 5% cobalt, 4% tungsten, 1.5% Manganese, and traces of other elements.

04/

X-Type Alloys
● Hastelloy X alloy (UNS N06002): It has superior oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength, and SCC resistance. Chemically Hastelloy X contains 44% Nickel, 23% Chromium, 20% iron, 10% molybdenum, 1% of Manganese and Silicon, and traces of other elements. They can be cold-worked and welded. This type of Hastelloy material is used for industrial furnace and gas turbine applications.

Industries Using Hastelloy steel pipe

Hastelloy steel pipe find applications in various industries where corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, and strength are crucial. Some of the industries where Hastelloy steel pipe are commonly used include:

Chemical Processing

In the chemical industry, Hastelloy steel pipe are used for transporting corrosive chemicals, acids, and solvents. They are particularly valuable in environments where materials like stainless steel would corrode rapidly.

Pulp and Paper

In the pulp and paper industry, Hastelloy steel pipe are employed in various stages of the manufacturing process, such as chemical pulping, bleaching, and chemical recovery, where corrosive chemicals are used.

Power Generation

In power plants, especially those using fossil fuels or nuclear energy, Hastelloy steel pipe are used in boilers, heat exchangers, and condensers where corrosion from high-temperature steam, water, or chemical additives is a concern.

Desalination

In desalination plants, where seawater or brackish water is treated to produce fresh water, Hastelloy steel pipe are used in evaporators, heat exchangers, and piping systems to withstand the corrosive effects of saltwater.

Metal Processing

In metallurgical processes such as smelting, refining, and electroplating, where corrosive chemicals and high temperatures are involved, Hastelloy steel pipe are used to transport and contain these substances safely.

FAQ

Q: Is Hastelloy steel pipe a type of steel?

A: Depending on the grade, stainless steel can contain anywhere from 10.5 to 30 percent chromium and up to 35 percent nickel. On the other hand, Hastelloy steel pipe is a group of alloys primarily composed of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium. It also contains small amounts of iron, tungsten, cobalt, and carbon.

Q: What is Hastelloy steel pipe good for?

A: In general, Hastelloy steel pipe B has excellent corrosion resistance against hydrogen chloride gas and hydrochloric acid. It also maintains a high degree of strength in high temperatures of up to 2003°F (1095 °C), making it a good manufacturing material for industrial equipment like rockets and combustion engines.

Q: How can you tell the difference between stainless steel and Hastelloy steel pipe?

A: Furthermore, the main distinction between Hastelloy steel pipe and stainless steel is that Hastelloy steel pipe has superior corrosion resistance to stainless steel. Furthermore, Hastelloy steel pipe is mostly composed of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, whereas stainless steel is primarily composed of iron, chromium, and carbon.

Q: Which is better Inconel or Hastelloy steel pipe?

A: Both alloys offer comparable corrosion-resisting benefits; however, Inconel has a slight advantage when used in oxidizing applcaitons. On the other hand, as it is more molybdenum forward, Hastelloy steel pipe offers better performance when subjected to reducing corrosion.

Q: Is Hastelloy steel pipe magnetic or not?

A: Non-magnetic: Hastelloy steel pipe C276 is non-magnetic and has low magnetic permeability. Non-toxic: The alloy is non-toxic and is therefore suitable for use in the pharmaceutical and food processing industries.

Q: What type of steel is Hastelloy steel pipe?

A: Hastelloy steel pipe is a term used to describe nickel metal that has been alloyed to increase corrosion resistance. This is primarily done through the addition of molybdenum and chromium. There are many grades of Hastelloy steel pipe, with each grade having a different chemical makeup to be optimized for a specific set of properties.

Q: When to use Hastelloy steel pipe?

A: The corrosion-resistant Hastelloy steel pipe alloys are widely used by the chemical processing industries. The need for reliable performance leads to their acceptance and growth in the areas of geothermal, solar energy, oil and gas and pharmaceutical.

Q: How can you tell stainless steel from Hastelloy steel pipe?

A: Hastelloy steel pipe has a higher melting point, whereas stainless steel has higher tensile strength ( 621 MPa or 90 KSI) and better rust resistance. The rust resistance is particularly notable in environments where nitric acid is prevalent.

Q: What grades of Hastelloy steel pipes do you offer?

A: We provide several grades, including Hastelloy C-276, C-22, B-2, and B-3, among others.

Q: What is the price per foot for Hastelloy steel pipes?

A: Prices vary depending on grade, size, and market conditions; contact us for current quotes.

Q: Are your Hastelloy pipes suitable for high-temperature applications?

A: Yes, Hastelloy steel is known for its excellent heat resistance, making it ideal for high-temp scenarios.

Q: How do you ensure the quality of your Hastelloy steel pipes?

A: We conduct rigorous inspections and tests to meet international quality standards.

Q: What is the difference between Hastelloy c 22 and c 276?

A: Both C-276 and C-22 have outstanding corrosion resistance — substantially more than any of the stainless steels — however, C-22 is commercially available from stock in sanitary or high purity tube while C276 is not. C-22 and C-276 provide about the same protection in reducing environments.
