Benefits of Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe

Corrosion Resistance

Duplex SS contains about 20% of chromium in addition to the molybdenum content. Together, these elements make duplex stainless steel grades extremely resistant to severely corrosive environments. Duplex and Super duplex grades of stainless steel can withstand crevice, pitting, chloride ion, and stress corrosion even at elevated temperatures.

Machining Properties

Duplex Stainless Steel grades have great fatigue strength and superior mechanical properties.

Heat resistant and hot-working range

Duplex stainless steel grades are resistant to heat and high-temperature environments. Duplex Steel Pipes and Tubes do not necessarily require forging, they can be rolled directly. However, in high heat environments, it is tougher to work with chromium alloys than austenitic alloys. Thus, it is easier to hot-roll duplex SS pipes that have low chromium content.

Weldability

Duplex SS grades have superior weldability. These pipes do not crack easily under pressure and heat influence. Preheating the material before the welding process is not required in the case of Duplex SS Pipes.

Types of Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe

Duplex stainless steel pipes are available in several types, each designed to meet specific performance requirements in various applications. The main types of duplex stainless steel pipes are categorized based on their alloying content and corrosion resistance properties.

1

Lean duplex

Lean duplex stainless steel pipes are characterized by their lower content of alloying elements, particularly nickel and molybdenum. This makes them a more economical option while still offering improved properties compared to standard austenitic grades.

2

Standard duplex

Standard duplex stainless steel pipes are the most commonly used type in the duplex family. They offer an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

3

Super duplex

Super duplex stainless steel pipes have higher contents of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen compared to standard duplex. This results in superior corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-containing environments

4

Hyper duplex

Hyper duplex stainless steel pipes represent the most highly alloyed type in the duplex family. They are designed for extremely aggressive environments where even super duplex might not be sufficient.

How To Weld Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe?

Duplex steel welding mainly uses electrode arc welding, such as welding rods and welding wires. The welding methods of different grades of duplex steel and other alloy steels should be determined according to the chemical composition of the electrode used, the joint location and the welding conditions.

In order to ensure a high carbon content in the weld, the base metal must be preheated and post-heated to reduce the carbon content in the weld. The electrode must be dried at 350°C for 1 hour before welding, and at 600°C after welding. Temper at ~700°C for 1 hour and then weld.

When welding, a small current should be used to ensure that the content of austenite and/or ferrite in the weld metal reaches close to 1:1. If a larger current is used, the ferrite content in the weld metal will increase, causing changes in the structure of the welding heat-affected zone and reducing the corrosion resistance of the joint.

During the welding process of duplex stainless steel, the phase transformation of austenite and ferrite will generate stress, causing changes in the internal structure of the welded joint, such as intergranular corrosion, recrystallization stress corrosion, and heat-affected zone embrittlement. Therefore, during the welding process, it is necessary to ensure that the weld metal has sufficient plasticity to prevent intergranular corrosion and embrittlement of the heat-affected zone. For this reason, selecting appropriate welding materials is the key to ensuring the welding quality of duplex stainless steel.

Applications of Duplex Stainless Steel Pipes

The versatility of duplex stainless steel pipes and duplex stainless steel tubes lends them to a myriad of programs across various industries. From vital structural components in offshore systems to piping structures in chemical processing vegetation, their superior performance in corrosive environments makes them fundamental.

Duplex stainless pipes are extensively used in upstream, midstream, and downstream operations in the oil and gas zone. Their resistance to sulfide strain corrosion cracking and high electricity-to-weight ratio makes them ideal for subsea pipelines, umbilicals, and downhole tubing packages.

Moreover, inside the chemical and petrochemical industries, in which exposure to competitive chemical compounds is not unusual, duplex stainless steel pipes provide remarkable resistance to corrosion, thereby ensuring the integrity and durability of piping systems.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between stainless steel and duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: Duplex steel is more robust than austenitic or SS316 grades. It also provides formability struggling and excellent hardiness. Another difference between SS316 and duplex stainless steel pipe is SS316 contains 18% chromium and eight nickel whereas, Duplex contains 18-28% of chromium and 4.5-8% of nickel or austenitic.

Q: What is the benefit of duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: Due to their excellent corrosion resistance, increased strength, and affordable pricing, duplex stainless steel pipes are popular in a variety of industries and markets, including: Offshore and near-shore operations such as oil drilling, desalination, water treatment, and other industrial operations.

Q: What is the difference between 304 and 2205 duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: The chemical, physical and mechanical properties of grade 2205 are quite superior to grade 304. Grade 2205 proffers extremely superior resistance to cracking, crevice, pitting and general corrosive mediums. Products designs and applications are offered more to grade 2205.

Q: What grade is duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: Grade 2205 (UNS S32205) is a popular example of standard duplex stainless steel pipe grades. Super Duplex (PREN 38-45): Super duplex stainless steel pipes are a subgroup that exhibits even higher corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. They have a higher alloy content, particularly in chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen.

Q: Can you weld duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: Duplex stainless steel pipes can be welded to other duplex stainless steel pipes, to austenitic stainless steels, and to carbon and low alloy steels. duplex stainless steel pipe filler metals with increased nickel content relative to the base metal are most frequently used to weld duplex stainless steel pipes to other duplex grades.

Q: What is the most common duplex stainless steel pipe?

A: Due to excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, the most widely used duplex stainless steel pipe is 2205. The name 2205 comes from a typical composition of 22% Chromium and 5% Nickel. Other designations for 2205 are given in the table below.

Q: What temperature should duplex stainless steel pipe be?

A: For a duplex steel 250°C is regarded as an acceptable maximum and for a superduplex 150°C maximum. Note, however, that many codes do not separate the grades into duplex and superduplex and 150°C is often required as the norm.

Q: What are the standard sizes available for your duplex stainless steel pipes?

A: We offer a range of sizes from 1/8" to 48", with wall thicknesses matching industry standards.

Q: Do you provide customization options for duplex stainless steel pipes?

A: Yes, we offer custom dimensions and lengths tailored to specific project needs.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity for duplex pipes?

A: The MOQ varies; for standard sizes, we often require a smaller MOQ compared to custom orders.

Q: How do you ensure the quality of your duplex stainless steel pipes?

A: We conduct rigorous tests including hydrostatic testing, chemical analysis, and non-destructive examinations.

Q: What is your return policy on duplex stainless steel pipes?

A: We accept returns under specific conditions within a limited time frame.

Q: How are your duplex pipes packed for shipping?

A: They are carefully packed in wooden crates or pallets to ensure safe delivery.

Q: Do you offer any installation guidance for duplex pipes?

A: Yes, we provide installation guidelines and can assist with best practices for pipe handling.

Q: Can duplex stainless steel pipe be hardened?

A: Duplex stainless steel pipes cannot be hardened by heat treatment. They can however be work hardened. Solution treatment or annealing can be done by rapid cooling after heating to around 1100°C.
