Seamless vs. Welded Inconel 625 Pipes

When specifying piping systems for critical operations, choosing between seamless and welded production methods affects both the cost and pressure rating.

1. Seamless Pipes (ASTM B444 Grade 1 & Grade 2)

Manufactured via hot extrusion or cold drawing, seamless Inconel 625 pipes feature a completely uniform grain structure free of weld lines.

Grade 1 (Annealed): Typically utilized for lower-temperature aqueous corrosion environments requiring maximum ductility.

Grade 2 (Solution Annealed): Heat-treated at higher temperatures to optimize grain boundaries, making it the standard choice for high-temperature creep and oxidation resistance above 650°C.

Best For: Ultra-high pressure hydraulic lines, nuclear reactors, and deep-sea oil extraction wells.

2. Welded Pipes (ASTM B705 / B704)

Produced by forming flat-rolled sheets or strips into a cylinder and executing a continuous longitudinal weld. Because Inconel 625 exhibits excellent weldability without post-weld heat treatment cracking, welded pipes are highly dependable.

The Dilution Factor: During manufacturing or overlay welding, controlling iron dilution from underlying substrates is crucial; higher iron content can compromise the chemical stability of the inner pipe surface.

Best For: Large-diameter low-pressure ducting, exhaust gas systems, and chemical processing exhaust stacks where seamless dimensions are cost-prohibitive.

Fabrication, Welding, and Installation Practices

While Inconel 625 is more versatile than many nickel-based superalloys, its high work-hardening rate requires specific fabrication parameters:

Machining: High rigidity, sharp tooling, and a constant feed rate are necessary. Light cuts can cause the material to work-harden, accelerating tool wear.

Welding Fillers: When joining Inconel 625 pipes, ERNiCrMo-3 welding wire is typically specified to maintain a matching chemical profile and prevent localized pitting along the weld seam.

Gas Shielding: 100% Argon or Argon-Helium mixtures are required for the backing gas to shield the root weld from oxidation.
