The outer diameter, or OD, is the measurement of the entire outside surface of the pipe. The inner diameter, or ID, is the measurement of the inside surface of the pipe. The nominal size refers to the approximate size of the pipe based on its inner diameter.
For example, a 1-inch pipe does not have an actual outer diameter of 1 inch. Rather, it has an OD of 1.315 inches. Similarly, a 3/4 inch pipe has an OD of 1.050 inches. The nominal size of a pipe is often the size listed in its name, such as a 1-inch Schedule 40 pipe or a 3/4-inch Schedule 80 pipe.
