ASME B16.11 Socket Weld (SW) Tees are cornerstone components in forged piping systems, offering a blend of structural strength and leak-proof reliability favored by the oil, gas, chemical, and power generation industries.
What is an ASME B16.11 Socket Weld Tee?
ASME B16.11 is the global standard for forged fittings, covering ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking, and material requirements for both socket-welding and threaded forged fittings.
A Socket Weld Tee is a forged fitting used to branch a pipeline at a 90-degree angle. Unlike butt-weld fittings, the pipe is inserted into a recessed area (the socket) of the tee before being joined by a fillet weld.
1. Pressure Ratings (Classes)
Socket weld fittings are classified by their pressure-temperature ratings, correlating to specific pipe schedules:
Class 3000: Matches Schedule 80 / Extra Strong (XS) pipe.
Class 6000: Matches Schedule 160 pipe.
Class 9000: Matches Double Extra Strong (XXS) pipe.
2. Common Material Grades
Carbon Steel: ASTM A105 (Standard high-temperature service).
Stainless Steel: ASTM A182 F304/304L, F316/316L (Corrosion resistance).
Alloy Steel: ASTM A182 F5, F11, F22 (High-temperature/High-pressure service).
Low-Temp Steel: ASTM A350 LF2 (For cold climate applications).
3. Size Range
Typically available from 1/8" to 4" (DN6 - DN100). For piping larger than 4 inches, butt-weld connections are generally preferred for better stress distribution.
SW Tee vs. Butt Weld (BW) Tee: Comparison Table
| Feature | Socket Weld Tee (ASME B16.11) | Butt Weld Tee (ASME B16.9) |
| Size Range | Small bore (up to 4") | All sizes (up to 80"+) |
| Welding Type | Fillet Weld | Groove/Butt Weld |
| Inspection | Magnetic Particle (MT) / Penetrant (PT) | Radiographic (RT) / X-Ray |
| Joint Strength | High (for small diameters) | Highest (best for all stresses) |
| Labor Cost | Lower (easy fit-up) | Higher (requires precision beveling) |

NOTE:
1) The average of the socket wall thickness around the periphery shall be no less than listed above. The minimum values are permitted in the localized area.
2) In view of the tolerance of the outside diameter of the pipes, there is a possibility that the socket bore diameter is a little greater than what is specified in ASME B16.11.
3) In case the sizes of the connecting pipes differ from the corresponding ones listed, the actual sizes of the matching pipes shall be specified in the purchasing documents.
