What Makes Series B (API 605) Unique?
ASME B16.47 covers large metallic flanges from NPS 26 through NPS 60. It is split into two distinct standards:
Series A (MSS SP-44 origin): Features thicker flange profiles, larger bolt circle diameters, and heavier weights. These are typically selected for rugged structural loads or custom vessel nozzles.
Series B (API 605 origin): Utilizes smaller bolt holes, a higher quantity of smaller bolts, and a slightly lower overall weight profile.
Key Engineering & Material Considerations
Facing Type: While Raised Face (RF) is the most common ordering option for Class 600, Ring Type Joint (RTJ) facings are also specified for high-temperature or extreme hydrogen service.
Material Grades: Common carbon steel forgings include ASTM A105 (ambient/high temp) and ASTM A350 LF2 (low-temperature service in northern climates). High-yield grades like ASTM A694 (F52, F60, F65) are standard across pipeline projects.
Bolting Torque & Gaskets: Due to the high bolt count in Series B (often 28 studs even at large diameters), use spiral wound gaskets with an inner/outer ring (Style CG or CGI) and strictly follow cross-pattern torque tightening protocols to prevent flange rotation or uneven seating.

Verify Existing Mating Flanges: Before issuing a purchase order for replacement blinds on existing infrastructure, verify whether the mating pipe flange is Series A or Series B.
Shipping Weight Logistics: Large Class 600 blind flanges easily exceed 1,000 to 3,000 lbs each. Ensure your field riggers have proper lifting lugs or eye-bolts integrated into the flange edge during shop fabrication.
