The ASME B16.5 Class 2500 Threaded Flange features a heavy, thick body compared to lower-pressure versions like Class 150 or 300 components. It is designed with an internal tapered female pipe thread (NPT) that matches the external threads of the high-pressure pipe.
A critical safety detail of the Class 2500 configuration is the integrated internal counterbore. Rather than letting the pipe thread completely through the flange face, the internal bore expands slightly near the back of the flange hub. This design serves two key purposes:
- It cushions the transition from the rigid flange hub to the pipe wall, minimizing localized stress concentrations.
- It prevents the male pipe from over-threading past the sealing surface, protecting the integrity of the gasket face.
Dimensional Profile and Heavy Wall Requirements
A Class 2500 flange is instantly recognizable by its massive profile. The steel-to-bore ratio is significantly higher than that of lower classes like Class 150 or 600.
- Size Limitations: Under ASME B16.5, threaded flanges are generally limited to small-diameter piping-typically NPS 1/2 to NPS 2 1/2 for practical high-pressure implementation. Finding standard threaded profiles beyond 4 inches in Class 2500 is rare because the mechanical torque required to seal large-diameter threads becomes unmanageable.
- The Counterbore Feature: Unlike low-pressure threaded flanges, a Class 2500 screwed flange features a heavy, precise counterbore at the back of the hub. This counterbore acts as a stress-relief zone and ensures that the pipe's external threads do not bear the full brunt of bending moments.
- Tapered NPT Threads: Connections rely on American National Standard Pipe Threads (NPT) per ASME B1.20.1. The inherent 1:16 taper creates a mechanical interference fit that compresses the thread flanks together as the flange is rotated onto the pipe.
