An ASME B16.5 Class 300 Lap Joint Flange features a distinct structural difference compared to a standard slip-on or weld neck design. It does not feature a raised sealing face of its own. Instead, it is engineered to back up a stub end (or a "lap joint stub end").
The pipe is welded directly to the stub end, while the lap joint flange remains free to slide over the pipe barrel. Because the flange can spin freely around the pipe, bolting alignment becomes exceptionally easy. This is highly beneficial in configurations where space is tight, and bolt holes are difficult to orient dynamically.
