The ASME B16.5 standard covers pipe flanges and flanged fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 24. Within this standard, the ASME B16.5 Class 300 Socket Weld (SW) Flanges features a distinctive structural profile: an internal, recessed counterbore that accepts the raw cut end of a pipe.
The pipe rests against a machined shoulder at the bottom of the socket, and a single fillet weld is applied to the exterior hub of the flange.
Why Choose Class 300?
Pressure classes (or ratings) indicate the maximum allowable non-shock working gauge pressure of a flange based on its material and temperature. A Class 300 rating indicates a highly resilient design capable of enduring severe industrial loads.
While a Class 150 flange is limited to lighter utility services, Class 300 components are thicker, use larger and more numerous bolts, and provide the robust structural integrity required for critical process environments.
Key Engineering Advantages & Design Limitations
The Advantages
Zero Internal Weld Intrusion: Unlike a slip-on flange that requires an internal fillet weld, an SW flange is welded exclusively on the outside hub. This keeps the internal pipe bore perfectly smooth, reducing turbulence and protecting fluid flow.
Self-Aligning Construction: The internal counterbore shoulder acts as a physical guide, maintaining the alignment of the pipe without requiring complex external fixtures before welding.
Elimination of Thread Leak Paths: SW flanges replace threaded configurations in volatile chemical applications, eliminating potential leak paths caused by thread deformation or galling.
The Limitations
The Crevice Corrosion Hazard: The mandatory 1/16-inch gap left between the pipe end and the socket shoulder can trap corrosive fluids. In stagnant or highly acidic media, this crevice accelerates localized corrosion.
Not Recommended for Cyclic Fatigue: Because a fillet weld concentrates stress at the hub toe, SW connections are less suited for piping systems subject to extreme thermal cycling or severe mechanical vibration compared to Weld Neck flanges.
Industrial Applications
Refineries and Petrochemical Facilities: Ideal for small-diameter utility piping, hydrogen feed lines, and hydrocarbon transfer networks.
Power Generation Plant Piping: Used extensively in high-pressure steam and condensate return lines where space constraints prevent the use of long-hub weld neck flanges.
Offshore Marine Engineering: Deployed in compact onboard hydraulic lines and fuel delivery systems where space optimization is critical.
