ASTM A312 ASME SA312 TP321 TP321H Material Properties

ASTM A312 TP321 Pipe

ASTM A312 and ASME SA312 are standards that define the specifications for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipes. One of the main applications of TP321 and TP321H is in high-temperature environments where corrosion resistance is critical. Both grades are highly resistant to corrosion, particularly in acidic environments. They are also resistant to intergranular corrosion and pitting.

Chemical Composition:

The chemical composition of TP321 and TP321H typically conforms to the requirements of ASTM A312 ASME SA312. The ASTM A312 TP321 key elements and their allowable ranges are as follows:
Carbon (C): 0.08% maximum
Manganese (Mn): 2.00% maximum
Phosphorus (P): 0.045% maximum
Sulfur (S): 0.030% maximum
Silicon (Si): 0.75% maximum
Chromium (Cr): 17.0 to 19.0%
Nickel (Ni): 9.0 to 12.0%
Titanium (Ti): 5(C + N) 0.70% maximum
Balance: Iron (Fe)

The "H" in TP321H indicates higher carbon content for enhanced high-temperature strength. TP321H typically has a carbon content within the range of 0.04 to 0.10%.

High Temperature Resistance

ASTM A312/ASME SA312 TP321: Suitable for general high temperature environments. Typically UNS S32100 provides good performance over a temperature range from room temperature to 800°F (427°C).

ASTM A312/ASME SA312 TP321H: Due to its high carbon content, it is more suitable in applications requiring higher high temperature strength. Typically UNS S32109 provides superior performance in high temperature environments between 800°F (427°C) and 1500°F (816°C).

Mechanical Properties:

The mechanical properties of TP321 and TP321H at room temperature are as follows:

  • Tensile Strength (ksi): 75
  • Yield Strength (ksi): 30
  • Elongation (% in 2 inches): 35
  • Hardness (Brinell): 217 max

Stainless Steel 1.4878 and 1.4541 Material Physical Properties:

  • Density: 0.29 lb/in³ (8.0 g/cm³)
  • Melting Range: 2500-2590°F (1371-1421°C)

Corrosion Resistance:
ASTM A312 TP321 and TP321H offer excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive environments, particularly in acidic chloride-containing service.

Heat Treatment:
ASTM A312 UNS S32100 and S32109 Solution Treatment (Annealing) at temperatures between 1900 and 2050°F (1038-1121°C) followed by rapid cooling is recommended for optimum corrosion resistance.

ASTM A321 TP321H and TP321 Applications:
TP321 and TP321H seamless and welde pipe are widely used in applications involving elevated temperatures, such as in the manufacturing of heat exchangers, boiler components, and various chemical processing equipment.

It's important to note that the mechanical and chemical properties can vary slightly depending on the specific heat treatment, manufacturing process, and product form (seamless or welded).
