ASTM B670 Inconel 718 Hot Rolled Plate

Inconel 718 is a nickel-chromium-based alloy that is commonly used in high-temperature applications such as aerospace and gas turbines. One of the most important factors in the production of ASTM B670 Inconel 718 Sheet is the plate rolling process. There are two main types of alloy 718 plates available on the market: hot rolled and cold rolled plates.

Hot Rolled Inconel 718 (ASTM B670 Plate)

Hot rolling takes place at extreme temperatures, typically above 1700°F (925°C). The nickel-alloy ingot is passed through heavy rolling mills while hot, allowing large thickness reductions in a single pass without causing internal work hardening.

Form Supply: Generally supplied as heavy plates (thicknesses greater than 3/16" or 4.76mm).

Surface Finish: Features a darker, slightly textured matte finish. It is typically descaled (pickled) or solution-annealed prior to final delivery.

Cold Rolled Inconel 718 (ASTM B670 Sheet & Strip)

Cold rolling takes place at room temperature following initial hot rolling and pickling. The material is compressed between rollers to achieve precise thicknesses, which introduces intentional strain hardening (work hardening) that boosts yield strength before final heat treatment.

Form Supply: Generally supplied as thin sheets and high-precision strips (thicknesses less than 3/16").

Surface Finish: Features a smooth, bright, and reflective surface finish with exceptional dimensional uniformity.

Hot Rolled vs. Cold Rolled Comparison

Choosing the right material condition ensures your components perform reliably while minimizing scrap loss during production machining.

Technical Parameter Hot Rolled (ASTM B670 Plate) Cold Rolled (ASTM B670 Sheet/Strip)
Common Thickness Range 4.76 mm to over 50 mm (3/16" and up) 0.3 mm to 4.0 mm (Thin gauge)
Dimensional Tolerance Standard commercial tolerances; slight variations due to thermal cooling contraction Tight, high-precision tolerances ideal for automated stamping/forming
Surface Profile Matte, slightly rough, descaled finish Bright, smooth, reflective or polished finish
Grain Structure Uniform, equiaxed recrystallized grains Elongated grain structure providing higher directional tensile properties before aging
Typical Applications Structural turbine casings, heavy flanges, rings, and pressure vessel walls Aircraft engine components, diaphragms, expansion joints, and high-strength springs

Mechanical Properties & Compliance Standards

Regardless of whether the material is hot or cold rolled, premium UNS N07718 flat products must meet or exceed the rigorous mechanical baselines established by ASTM B670 after full precipitation hardening (aging).

Key Precipitation-Hardened Mechanical Requirements (ASTM B670):

Tensile Strength: ≥ 180 ksi (1241 MPa)

Yield Strength (0.2% Offset): ≥ 150 ksi (1034 MPa)

Elongation in 2 inches: ≥ 12%

Procurement Alignment Note: While ASTM B670 governs flat-rolled plates and sheets, matching structural frameworks often demand round bars or forged bars. To guarantee seamless engineering compatibility across your assembly, verify that your bar components align precisely with the AMS 5663 standard for Inconel 718 round bars.
