Flat Face (FF) Spectacle Blinds in ASTM A515 Gr. 70 is a dual-function piping component machined from a single piece of metal plate.
The device consists of two distinct web-connected discs:
- The Flow Disc (Open Ring): A solid ring with an inside diameter that matches the internal diameter (bore) of the surrounding pipeline. When this side is active, it allows uninhibited fluid or gas flow through the joint.
- The Blind Disc (Solid Plate): A completely solid, circular plate designed to block the passage of fluid entirely.
The Mechanics of Rotary Isolation
Unlike a blind flange, which must be completely unbolted, lifted out via heavy crane, and replaced with an entirely separate standard flange during line breaks, a spectacle blind remains permanently anchored within the flange bolt circle.
- To change the line state from open to isolated:
- The piping system is depressurized, drained, and purged.
- The bolts around the flange assembly are loosened.
- The single bolt serving as the pivot axis (frequently located through a hole drilled in the web connecting the two discs) is left loosely intact.
- The spectacle blind is rotated 180℃ swing the solid disc into the flow path.
- New gaskets are installed, and the flange bolts are retorqued to specification.

ASTM A515 Grade 70
The performance of any pressure-containing piping component is bound to its material chemistry. The specification ASTM A515 Grade 70 denotes a high-strength carbon-silicon steel plate intended primarily for intermediate- and higher-temperature service in boilers and other pressure vessels.
Chemical Composition Breakdown
To understand how ASTM A515 Gr. 70 withstands elevated temperatures without yielding, we must analyze its elemental composition. The table below details the typical weight percentages for this material grade (subject to plate thickness variations under ASTM standards):
| Element | Weight Percentage (Max / Range) |
| Carbon (C) | 0.28% – 0.33% (depending on thickness) |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.90% – 1.30% |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.15% – 0.40% |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035% (Max) |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.035% (Max) |
Coarse-Grain Structure and High-Temperature Creep Resistance
A critical differentiator between ASTM A515 and its sister specification, ASTM A516, lies in grain structure refinement.
- ASTM A516 is killed steel manufactured using fine-grain practices, optimizing it for ambient and lower-temperature applications where notch toughness is vital.
- ASTM A515 is manufactured using a coarse-grain practice.
Mechanical Properties
ASTM A515 Grade 70 provides excellent mechanical properties, allowing for slimmer component profiles while managing high internal line pressures:
- Tensile Strength: 70–90 ksi (485–620 MPa)
- Yield Strength (Minimum): 38 ksi (260 MPa)
- Elongation in 8 inches (Minimum): 17%
- Elongation in 2 inches (Minimum): 21%
Step-by-Step Field Inversion Protocol
When altering the line state using an ASTM A515 Gr. 70 FF spectacle blind, operators must abide by strict safety steps:
Isolation & Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Upstream and downstream block valves must be shut, locked, and tagged. The line must be completely depressurized and verified empty via bleeder valves.
Structural Support: Because high-temperature lines are subject to thermal expansion and contraction, thermal stresses can accumulate within the pipe string. If the flange bolts are removed without supporting the pipe, the two halves of the pipeline may spring apart or sag, making re-alignment impossible and risking injury. Temporary pipe rigging or jacks must be installed if necessary.
Bolt Extraction: Operators loosen all bolts. The bolts on the lower half of the flange are typically removed entirely, while a select few on the upper half are left loose. The central pivot bolt in the web must remain threaded.
Flange Separation: Mechanical flange spreaders are carefully engaged to spread the mating faces just far enough to clear the gasket seats without overstressing the piping anchors.
Rotation: The spectacle blind is rotated around its pivot bolt. Given the weight of thick ASTM A515 Gr. 70 plates, rigging lines or chain hoists may be required for large-diameter lines (e.g., above 12 inches).
Gasket Replacement: Old full-face gaskets must be completely discarded. The flat faces of both the mating flanges and the spectacle blind must be cleaned using brass wire brushes to prevent scoring the seating serrations. New gaskets are then inserted.
Torque Sequence: The flange spreaders are retracted. Bolts are cleaned, lubricated, and reinserted. Tightening must proceed using a multi-pass star pattern sequence (cross-pattern) utilizing a calibrated hydraulic torque wrench to achieve uniform gasket compression across the flat face.
Corrosion Mitigation and Surface Protection
Because the inactive half of a spectacle blind extends outside the physical pipeline, it is continuously exposed to atmospheric conditions. In coastal refineries like those in Houston or Jurong Island, the humid, salt-laden air will rapidly oxidize raw carbon steel.
To prevent atmospheric corrosion from degrading the sealing surfaces of the inactive disc:
- The external, non-contact surfaces are coated with high-temperature-resistant primers (such as inorganic zinc silicate).
- The machined sealing faces are protected with a thick layer of peelable plastic, heavy-duty rust-preventative grease, or covered with custom-fitted weather-resistant canvas wraps while exposed to the elements.
