Is 321 stainless steel better than 304?

321 stainless steel pipe

Whether 321 stainless steel is better than 304 stainless steel depends on the specific requirements of your application. Both grades have advantages and are suitable for different purposes. Here are some key differences between the two:

1. Composition: Both 321 and 304 stainless steel contain chromium and nickel, which contribute to their corrosion resistance. However, 321 stainless steel pipe also contains titanium, which stabilizes the alloy and prevents sensitization when welding.

2. Corrosion resistance: Both have good corrosion resistance, but 321 stainless steel performs better in high-temperature environments. It is particularly resistant to intergranular corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation, making it suitable for applications involving prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

3. Weldability: These two grades can generally be welded, but due to the presence of titanium, 321 stainless steel is more resistant to sensitization and intergranular corrosion during welding. This makes it easier to achieve a good weld without compromising the corrosion resistance of the material.

4. Cost: Generally speaking, 304 stainless steel pipe is more widely used and cheaper than 321 stainless steel pipes.

If you need better high-temperature strength and resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion, 321 stainless steel may be a better choice. However, if your application does not involve high temperatures or corrosive environments, 304 stainless steel may be more cost-effective while still offering good corrosion resistance.
