ASTM B127 is the standard specification for Nickel-Copper Alloy (UNS N04400), commonly known as Monel 400. Monel 400 is a solid-solution alloy that offers excellent corrosion resistance in various environments, particularly in marine and chemical processing applications.
Standard Mechanical Properties of ASTM B127 UNS N04400
The mechanical performance of ASME SB 127 UNS N04400 varies depending on the product form and heat treatment condition (annealed, stress-relieved, or hard tempers). Below are the standard mechanical property requirements for hot-rolled and cold-rolled plates under annealed conditions:
| Mechanical Property Attribute | Metric Value | Imperial Value |
| Tensile Strength (Minimum) | 485 - 550 MPa | 70,000 - 80,000 psi |
| Yield Strength (0.2% Offset, Min) | 195 - 240 MPa | 28,000 - 35,000 psi |
| Elongation at Break (in 2 inches, Min) | 35% - 40% | 35% - 40% |
| Rockwell Hardness (Maximum) | 75 - 85 HRB | 75 - 85 HRB |
| Brinell Hardness (HB, Nominal) | 130 - 150 HB | 130 - 150 HB |
Key Structural & Performance Characteristics
Cryogenic to Elevated Temperature Stability: Unlike many ferrous metals, Monel 400 alloy plate exhibits excellent mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures. It transitions to cryogenic states without showing significant embrittlement, retaining high impact toughness and tensile strength.
Excellent Shear & Yield Strength: The solid-solution strengthened matrix allows ASTM B127 sheet to withstand extreme dynamic stress loads, resisting high pressure environments in saltwater piping systems, heat exchangers, and distillation towers.
Advanced Processing & Material Behaviors
1. Heat Treatment and Work Hardening
Monel 400 is a non-hardenable alloy, meaning its mechanical strength cannot be altered via thermal treatments like precipitation hardening. Increased tensile strength and hardness are achieved exclusively through cold working (strain hardening).
Annealing: Performed between 760°C and 870°C (1400°F to 1600°F) to hold structural ductility, followed by a rapid water quench or air cool.
Stress Relieving: Typically executed at approximately 540°C to 600°F (1000°F to 1100°F) to minimize internal residual stress generated during heavy fabrication without altering the fully recrystallized grain structure.
2. Fabrication and Machinability Traits
Welding: UNS N04400 plate exhibits excellent weldability using standard commercial methods, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG). Matching filler metal ERNiCu-7 or welding electrodes ENiCu-7 must be utilized to preserve weld-joint corrosion resistance.
Machining: Due to its high work-hardening rate, machining requires rigid setups, sharp tool geometries, and heavy, continuous feeds to prevent the tool from riding on the work-hardened surface layer.
