Fabricability, Machining, and Welding Guidelines

Due to its high work-hardening rate, processing 6Mo Super Austenitic Stainless Steel requires experienced adherence to technical manufacturing standards:

Welding Procedures: 254 SMO exhibits good weldability using standard gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG) or gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG). However, due to the risk of molybdenum segregation in the weld pool, over-alloyed filler metals like Alloy 625 (ERNiCrMo-3) must be used to preserve full corrosion protection across the seam joint.

Machining Speeds: The structural toughness means the alloy resists cutting forces. Machinery must employ low, positive feed speeds, sharp heavy-duty tooling, and rich flood lubrication to prevent glazing.
