  • Seawater and Marine Environments: Monel 400 is virtually unaffected by seawater corrosion, including pitting and crevice corrosion, even at high flow rates.
  • Hydrofluoric Acid (HF): It offers excellent resistance to all concentrations of HF, especially under deoxygenated conditions, even at elevated temperatures.
  • Sulfuric and Hydrochloric Acids: It excels with reducing acids such as sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, outperforming standard stainless steels, especially at dilute to moderate concentrations and lower temperatures.

  • High Strength: Its tensile and yield strengths are significantly higher than those of standard austenitic stainless steels (such as 304/316), even at elevated temperatures.
  • Excellent Toughness: Maintains excellent toughness and ductility over a wide temperature range, from cryogenic applications to liquid hydrogen temperatures to moderately elevated temperatures (approximately 1000°F / 538°C in oxidizing atmospheres). Resists embrittlement at low temperatures.
  • Creep Resistance: Performs well under sustained loads at elevated temperatures.
  • Impact Resistance: Highly resistant to mechanical shock and vibration.

  • Weldability: Can be welded using common welding techniques, such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW/MIG), and manual metal arc welding (SMAW). A matching Monel 400 filler metal (such as ERNiCu-7) is generally recommended. Preheating is generally not required, but controlling heat input and interpass temperatures is crucial to minimizing susceptibility to hot cracking. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
  • Formability: Good ductility allows for cold forming (bending, flaring) of pipes. However, it work-hardens more rapidly than austenitic stainless steels, requiring more powerful equipment, and intermediate annealing may be necessary to achieve complex shapes.
  • Machinability: Machinable, but challenging due to rapid work hardening. Rigid fixtures, sharp tools, positive rake angles, slow rotational speeds, high feed rates, and ample coolant flow are required. Chipbreakers are essential. Machinability can be significantly improved with machining grades.
