AMS5590 Inconel 718 Seamless tubing
AMS 5590 is a designation of Inconel 718 Seamless Tube, itself a nickel-chromium alloy with high strength, corrosion and oxidation resistance, and excellent tensile and impact strength at cryogenic temperatures. This designation is made by solution annealing at 1950°F (1065°C) followed by rapid cooling, usually in water, and precipitation hardening is done at 1400°F (760°C) for 10 hours and furnace cool to 1200°F (650°C), then aging at the same temperature for 20 hours.
It is available as tubing and thus it is best suited for fluid lines and components that require resistance and stress-rupture of up to 1300°F (705°C), and oxidation resistance of up to 1800°F (982°C).
AMS5590 is an excellent choice for tensile-limited applications. It has the best transverse ductility in heavy sections, better impact strength, and low-temperature notch strength. Efficiency when welding is about 100% with the gas tungsten-arc process and using the proprietary Nickel Filler Metal 718. AMS 5590 Nickel Inconel 718 can be age-hardened directly, without stress relief.

AMS 5589 vs. AMS 5590: What is the Difference?
While both specifications govern premium corrosion- and heat-resistant Inconel 718 seamless tubing, the primary difference lies in their solution heat treatment temperatures, which dictate their final mechanical behavior and ideal application environments.
| Technical Property / Specification | AMS 5589 Seamless Tubing | AMS 5590 Seamless Tubing |
| Primary Material Form | Seamless Tubing (≥ 0.125" OD) | Seamless Tubing (Fluid lines, heavy sections) |
| Solution Heat Treatment | 1775°F (968°C) followed by rapid cooling | 1950°F (1066°C) followed by rapid cooling |
| Precipitation Hardening (Aging) | 1325°F (718°C) for 8 hours, furnace cool to 1150°F (620°C) | 1400°F (760°C) for 10 hours, furnace cool to 1200°F (650°C), age for 20 hours |
| Key Mechanical Performance | Optimized for high creep-rupture strength up to 1300°F | Superior transverse ductility in heavy sections, enhanced impact/notch strength |
| Welding Characteristics | Excellent weldability; post-weld heat treatment recommended | Can be age-hardened directly without initial stress-relief |
