What is Hastelloy B2 Pipe?

Hastelloy b2 pipe supplier. Contact us to get free qote and sample!

Hastelloy B2, a second-generation nickel-molybdenum alloy, was developed specifically to address the knife-edge corrosion and intergranular corrosion issues encountered during welding by previous generations. This alloy achieves a revolutionary breakthrough through precise compositional control, specifically by strictly limiting the iron and chromium content. This fundamentally prevents the formation of β-phase Ni₄Mo, thereby ensuring the material's structural stability and long-term corrosion resistance.

hastelloy b2 Chemical composition

The design philosophy of Hastelloy B2 embodies a precise balance. By controlling the iron content to 1.6-2.0%, the chromium content to 0.4-0.7%, and the carbon content to extremely low levels (≤0.02%) within the nickel-molybdenum matrix, the precipitation of harmful phases in the medium temperature range of 550-900°C is effectively suppressed. The ingenuity of this compositional design lies in sacrificing some corrosion resistance in oxidizing environments in exchange for unmatched corrosion resistance in reducing media, creating a distinct differentiation from the Hastelloy C series.

ASTM B474 hastelloy b2 pipe Physical Properties

Hastelloy B2 tubing features a high density (9.24 g/cm³), reflecting the inherent properties of its nickel-molybdenum alloy. Its melting point ranges from 1330-1380°C, making it suitable for medium- and high-temperature corrosive environments, but temperature limits must be observed for long-term use. The alloy's thermal conductivity ranges from approximately 10.8-29.3 W/(m·K) and its coefficient of linear expansion ranges from 11.5-13.6×10⁻⁶/°C. These thermophysical properties are crucial in equipment design.

UNS N10665 mechanical properties

Hastelloy B2 tubing exhibits a balance of high strength and ductility. Its room-temperature tensile strength is ≥690 MPa, its yield strength is ≥310 MPa, and its elongation is ≥40%, ensuring the tubing maintains structural integrity under high pressure and stress. It's worth noting that these properties were measured in the solution-annealed state, the standard state in which the pipe is supplied.

alloy b2 high-temperature performance

Hastelloy B2 maintains stable mechanical properties below 400°C, but its strength gradually decreases above this temperature. Therefore, its long-term operating temperature is recommended not to exceed 150°C, while short-term use can be up to 400°C, subject to consideration of the influence of the medium environment. This temperature limit makes it more suitable for medium-low temperature but highly corrosive environments, such as hydrochloric acid pickling and acetic acid distillation.

hast. b2 pipe corrosive environments

alloy n10665 tubing hydrochloric acid media

In hydrochloric acid media, it exhibits unparalleled corrosion resistance, resisting corrosion under all concentrations and temperatures, including concentrated hydrochloric acid boiling at atmospheric pressure. Experimental data shows that in an oxygen-free hydrochloric acid environment with a concentration of ≤40% and a temperature of ≤70°C, the corrosion rate is less than 0.1 mm/year.

n10665 steel pipe sulfuric acid environment

In a sulfuric acid environment, Hastelloy B2 exhibits excellent resistance to sulfuric acid at concentrations of ≤70% and temperatures of ≤50°C. Particularly noteworthy is its excellent corrosion resistance in moderately concentrated sulfuric acid (or those containing a certain amount of chloride ions).

Corrosion resistance in organic acid environments is another area where Hastelloy B2 excels. In organic acid media such as acetic acid and formic acid, the alloy maintains an extremely low corrosion rate, even at higher temperatures.
