Both S32205 and S31803 are duplex stainless steel grades, but they differ slightly in composition and properties. S32205, also known as 2205, has a higher nitrogen content than S31803. The nitrogen content in S32205 is typically about 0.14-0.20%, while the nitrogen content in S31803 is about 0.08-0.20%. The higher nitrogen content in S32205 improves its mechanical properties such as yield strength and corrosion resistance.
What is the Evolution of S31803 to S32205?

UNS S31803 is the original standard composition for 22% chromium duplex stainless steel. It was developed to bridge the gap between austenitic and ferritic steels, offering high yield strength and excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
UNS S32205 was introduced later as an optimized, tighter specification of Duplex 2205. By raising the minimum levels of Chromium, Molybdenum, and Nitrogen, metallurgists created a grade with enhanced corrosion protection and superior heat-affected zone (HAZ) stability during welding.
