Incoloy 825 Heat Treatment Specification | UNS N08825 Pipe & Plate

N08825 Material Heat Treatment:

The heat treatment of N08825, also known as Alloy 825 or Incoloy 825 or 2.4858, is crucial for achieving its desired mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. This nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum, copper, and titanium is renowned for its excellent resistance to both reducing and oxidizing acids, stress-corrosion cracking, and pitting.

Heat Treatment Process

The typical heat treatment process for alloy 825 UNS N08825 involves annealing. Annealing is a heat treatment process that alters the microstructure of a material to change its mechanical or electrical properties. For N08825, annealing helps to optimize the alloy's corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Why is Titanium Stabilization Heat Treatment Important?

A major metallurgical benefit of Incoloy 825 is its titanium addition (typically 0.6% to 1.2%). Titanium has a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium does.

During the stabilizing heat treatment (often done in conjunction with annealing), titanium carbonitride (TiCN) precipitates are formed. This locks up the free carbon within the matrix, preventing the formation of chromium carbides. As a result, the alloy remains highly resistant to intergranular corrosion, even when exposed to temperatures in the sensitization range (540°C to 760°C / 1000°F to 1400°F) during welding or service.

Key Benefits of Correct Alloy 825 Heat Treatment

Complete Stress Relief: Eliminates micro-stresses introduced during heavy cold-working (such as tube drawing or plate rolling) and prevents stress-corrosion cracking in service.

Optimal Mechanical Properties: Balances high tensile strength with excellent elongation and yield properties, meeting the requirements of ASME SB423 and SB424.

Homogenized Chemistry: Ensures alloying elements like molybdenum and copper are distributed uniformly, providing consistent corrosion resistance across the entire pipe wall.

Annealing Process:

  1. Heating: Heat the material to a temperature range of 940-980°C (1724-1796°F).
  2. Holding: Hold at the annealing temperature to ensure uniform heating. The holding time depends on the thickness of the material, typically around 30-60 minutes.
  3. Cooling: Rapidly cool the material in air or water. The rapid cooling is essential to retain the desired mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Purpose of Annealing

  1. Stress Relief: Reduces residual stresses caused by prior processing, such as forming or welding.
  2. Grain Structure Refinement: Refines the grain structure, enhancing toughness and ductility.
  3. Homogenization: Helps to homogenize the chemical composition throughout the material, which is crucial for consistent corrosion resistance.
  4. Optimization of Mechanical Properties: Ensures the material achieves its optimal combination of strength and ductility.
