ASTM B423 UNS N08825 is the standard specification for this nickel-iron-chromium alloy in the form of seamless pipes and tubes. Incoloy 825 UNS N08825 is known for its excellent resistance to various corrosive environments, including sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and chloride-containing solutions.
Nickel alloy 825 also has good mechanical properties and can be used in both high-temperature and cryogenic applications. Incoloy 825 seamless pipes and tubes are commonly used in various industries, including chemical processing, petrochemicals, oil and gas, and marine environments.
The Power of Alloy 825 Chemistry: Why It Outperforms Stainless Steel
The exceptional corrosion resistance of UNS N08825 stems from a highly balanced, robust chemical composition that targets specific industrial failure points.
High Nickel Content (38.0% – 46.0%): This high-nickel base gives the alloy absolute immunity to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking (SCC), a common cause of catastrophic failure in standard 316L stainless steel lines.
Chromium Additions (19.5% – 23.5%): Provides excellent resistance to oxidizing environments, such as nitric acid mixtures, nitrates, and oxidizing salts.
Molybdenum (2.5% – 3.5%) and Copper (1.5% – 3.0%): This specific combination grants superior resistance to reducing media, including sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and aggressive organic chemical streams.
Titanium Stabilization (0.6% – 1.2%): By binding with carbon to form titanium carbides, this element prevents chromium depletion at the grain boundaries during welding, keeping the heat-affected zone completely resistant to intergranular corrosion.
Mechanical Performance and Physical Boundaries
ASTM B423 UNS N08825 maintains impressive mechanical properties at both room temperatures and elevated operational scales, making it ideal for deep-well oil production and chemical reactors.
