ASTM B622 UNS N10665 refers to a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy, which is also known by its trade name "Hastelloy B-2."
Hastelloy alloy B-2 seamless pipe is a corrosion-resistant alloy that is primarily composed of nickel (Ni) with significant amounts of molybdenum (Mo) and chromium (Cr). It is known for its excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including strong acids and reducing conditions.
| Element | Content Range (%) | Primary Metallurgical Function |
| Nickel (Ni) | Balance (65% – 70%) | Provides base matrix stability and high-temperature strength. |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 26.0% – 30.0% | Delivers superior resistance to reducing acids (e.g., hydrochloric, sulfuric). |
| Iron (Fe) | 2.0% max | Minimized to maintain resistance to localized attack. |
| Chromium (Cr) | 1.0% max | Offers auxiliary oxidation resistance. |
| Cobalt (Co) | 1.0% max | Controls high-temperature phase stability. |
| Carbon (C) | 0.02% max | Low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation during welding. |
Mechanical Properties of UNS N10665 Seamless Pipes
When evaluating Hastelloy B-2 seamless tubes for pressure vessels or piping systems, engineers look to the mechanical properties required under ASTM B622:
| Mechanical Property | Metric (Typical Minimum) | Imperial / US Standard |
| Tensile Strength (Min) | ≥ 790 MPa | 115 ksi |
| Yield Strength (0.2% Offset, Min) | ≥ 350 MPa | 50 ksi |
| Elongation in 2 in. (50mm), Min | ≥ 40% | 40% |
| Brinell Hardness (Max) | ≤ 230 HBW | ≤ 230 HBW |
Key Characteristics & Advantages
Outstanding Resistance to Hydrochloric Acid: UNS N10665 is uniquely suited for handling hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and boiling points.
Resistance to Reducing Media: Provides exceptional performance in reducing environments containing sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids.
Low Carbon Weldability: The extremely low carbon content (max 0.02%) minimizes carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding, allowing the pipe to be used in the as-welded condition for most chemical processes.
Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance: Highly immune to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
Typical Industrial Applications
Chemical Processing: Equipment, piping, and reactors involved in the production of acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and chlorinated catalysts.
Pharmaceutical Industry: Handling corrosive reaction media requiring contamination-free containment.
Petrochemical Refineries: Waste acid recovery systems and alkylation units.
