Product Introduction

Nickel 200 pipe, UNS N02200, is the commercially pure wrought nickel grade that has served the chemical process industry for decades in the applications where alloyed stainless steels fail: hot caustic solutions, dry chlorine, and reducing chemicals. Its specification basis is ASTM B161 for seamless pipe and tube. The alloy is distinguished not by alloying but by purity - nickel content of at least 99.0 percent - which gives it a corrosion profile that stainless steel cannot imitate.

Chemical Composition: The Strength of Purity (ASTM B161 N02200)

Nickel 200 carries a minimum nickel content of 99.0 percent, with carbon held to 0.15 percent and every other element tightly limited. That near-pure nickel matrix is exactly what gives the alloy its two signature properties: immunity to caustic stress-corrosion cracking and excellent performance in reducing media.

Element Composition, % (ASTM B161, N02200) Engineering role
Ni 99.0 min Matrix; caustic and reducing-media resistance
C 0.15 max Controlled for fabricability
Mn 0.35 max Deoxidation
Fe 0.40 max Impurity limit
Si 0.35 max Deoxidation
Cu 0.25 max Impurity limit
S 0.010 max Impurity limit

The carbon row is the one buyers should understand before ordering. Nickel 200 is fully weldable and formable, but its carbon content means the alloy is not recommended for service above roughly 315 °C, where graphitization can occur over long exposure. For higher-temperature caustic service, the low-carbon companion grade Nickel 201 (UNS N02201) is the correct specification, a distinction that appears repeatedly in corrosion literature and should appear on every procurement inquiry.

Mechanical Properties in the Annealed Condition

ASTM B161 specifies Nickel 200 pipe in several tempers; the annealed condition is the standard for corrosion service. Typical annealed room-temperature values are shown below.

Property Typical value (annealed) Notes
Tensile strength 380 – 550 MPa (55 – 80 ksi) Annealed, per B161 temper system
Yield strength, 0.2% offset 105 – 275 MPa (15 – 40 ksi) Annealed
Elongation in 50 mm 40 – 55% Annealed; very ductile
Density 8.89 g/cm³ Approximate
Melting range 1435 – 1445 °C Approximate

Nickel 200 is not bought for strength; its yield strength is modest compared with the alloyed nickels and stainless steels. It is bought for corrosion performance and for the exceptional ductility that makes it one of the easiest nickel alloys to fabricate, bend and weld. For pressure-retaining lines, allowable stress values are taken from ASME Section II-D Table 1A under N02200.

Corrosion Performance: The Service Envelope

The corrosion envelope of Nickel 200 pipe is defined by a small set of decisive environments:

  • Caustic soda and caustic potash solutions at all concentrations up to the 315 °C service ceiling, where austenitic stainless steel suffers caustic stress-corrosion cracking.
  • Dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride gas, where the pure nickel matrix resists attack that destroys stainless steel.
  • Reducing media such as dilute non-oxidizing acids, where the absence of alloying elements prevents the localized attack that afflicts alloyed grades.
  • Food and pharmaceutical processing where product purity demands a corrosion-resistant, non-contaminating surface.

The boundary is equally clear: Nickel 200 is not for oxidizing media. Hot nitric acid, oxidizing salts and aerated sulfuric acid attack the alloy rapidly, and in those services the chromium-bearing nickel alloys are the correct specification. Stating the medium and its oxidizing character on the enquiry prevents the classic misapplication.

Size Range, Schedules and Fabrication Notes

ASTM B161 covers seamless Nickel 200 pipe and tube from small instrument lines to large process lines, in schedules SCH 10S through SCH 80S and heavier. The dimensional tolerance system follows the nickel-alloy seamless pipe class with wall tolerance +20% / -12.5%. The alloy welds readily with matching nickel filler, no preheat is required, and its ductility makes it a forgiving material in the fabrication shop - bends, flanges and tube expansions are routine operations that on stainless steel demand far more care.

Applications and Industries

Installed Nickel 200 pipe is found in chlor-alkali plants and caustic evaporation circuits, chlorine handling systems, synthetic fiber production lines, magnetic and electronic component manufacturing, food processing, and any plant where hot caustic or dry chlorine moves through piping.

What to State on the Enquiry

Specify ASTM B161 UNS N02200 in the annealed condition, nominal size and schedule or explicit OD × wall, the certificate type (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), and the service temperature so the supplier can confirm the grade against the 315 °C graphitization limit - if the service exceeds that temperature, the enquiry should name Nickel 201 (N02201) instead. For pressure-retaining lines, request the ASME Section II-D Table 1A allowable stress basis for N02200.

Nickel 200 vs Nickel 201 vs 316L vs Monel 400: The Buying Decision

The procurement decision for caustic and reducing service usually compares four products.

Against 316L, Nickel 200 wins decisively in hot caustic, where stainless fails by cracking, but loses in oxidizing media and on price per kilogram.

Against Monel 400, Nickel 200 is the better choice in caustic and reducing media while Monel wins in seawater and hydrofluoric service.

Against Nickel 201, the choice is purely thermal: below roughly 315 °C either grade serves, and Nickel 200 is the standard economic pick; above it, only low-carbon Nickel 201 is safe. Matching the medium, temperature and oxidizing character to these boundaries is what separates a correct material choice from a premature failure.

Nickel 200 pipe is a mature, fully documented product: the chemistry and mechanical values above are verifiable against ASTM B161 and ASME SB-161, and every certified heat carries the analysis and test record that project acceptance requires.
