Critical Performance Characteristics of C22 Piping

Resistance to Localized Attack

In stagnant or slow-moving fluids containing halides (such as chlorides or fluorides), standard stainless steel often experiences localized pitting or crevice corrosion. These insidious forms of attack can cause unexpected wall perforations while the rest of the pipe remains pristine. The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten in Alloy C22 stabilizes the passive surface film, preventing localized breakdown even in hot, acidic brine solutions.

Mitigation of Weld-Zone Intergranular Precipitation

A classic problem when welding high-alloy materials is "weld decay"-the precipitation of carbides or intermetallic phases along grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). This leaves the area adjacent to the weld vulnerable to intergranular attack. Hastelloy C22 maintains an ultra-low carbon ceiling, which suppresses grain-boundary precipitation during welding and allows the pipes to be deployed in the as-welded state without mandatory post-weld heat treatment.

Broad-Spectrum Chemical Versatility

Industrial waste streams and multi-product batch processing plants rarely run a single, predictable chemical. Piping networks may transport a reducing acid in the morning and an oxidizing wash solution in the afternoon. Alloy C22 functions as a universal material, resisting corrosion across a wide range of chemical processes, including:

  • Ferric and cupric chlorides
  • Hot contaminated mineral acids (sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric)
  • Formic and acetic organic acid systems
  • Chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and hypochlorite bleaches

Manufacturing Specifications and Standards

Procuring industrial piping requires compliance with rigid standards to verify dimensional tolerance, pressure ratings, and metallurgical integrity. Hastelloy C22 pipes are supplied under several common manufacturing criteria:

Seamless vs. Welded Configurations

Seamless Pipe (ASTM B622 / ASME SB622): Extruded and cold-drawn without a longitudinal weld line. Specified for high-pressure systems, severe mechanical stress, or critical environments where eliminating potential weld line vulnerabilities is a priority.

Welded Pipe (ASTM B619 / ASME SB619): Fabricated from rolled strip or plate and automatically welded. A cost-effective solution for larger diameters and low-to-medium pressure processing applications.

Testing Protocol (ASTM B775 / ASME SB775): Defines the general requirements for supplementary testing, including hydrostatic validation, eddy-current non-destructive examinations, and precise dimensional verification.
