Fabrication Realities: Welding and Forming

A material is only as good as its workable potential. Fortunately, despite its extreme hot-hardness, Hastelloy X industrial sheet is highly adaptive to standard machine shops.

Cold & Hot Forming Guidelines

Due to excellent room-temperature ductility (averaging 44-45% elongation), the material can be deep-drawn, stamped, or press-brake formed. However, because it work-hardens rapidly, severe deformations require intermediate stress-relief annealing. For hot working, the entire sheet must be brought to an even temperature of 2150°F (1177°C) before handling.

Welding Protocols

Unlike older generation superalloys prone to micro-fissuring, Hastelloy X features excellent weldability. It matches perfectly with multiple fabrication techniques:

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG)

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / MIG)

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW / Stick)

Critical Fabrication Note: To restore the optimal structural balance of properties and prevent secondary-phase precipitation (which reduces ductility), all finished or heavily cold-worked parts should be solution heat-treated at 2150°F (1177°C) and rapidly air or hydrogen quenched.

Industrial Environments and Deployment Profiles

The true marker of Alloy X sheet utility is its dynamic atmospheric tolerance. Where other superalloys crumble due to carburization or nitriding, Hastelloy X thrives.

Aerospace Propulsion and Gas Turbines

In modern aviation, combustion zones experience wild thermal cycling. AMS 5536 Hastelloy X sheets are fabricated directly into transition ducts, combustor cans, spray bars, and flame holders. The alloy absorbs high thermal energy without excessive volumetric expansion, protecting critical turbine geometries.

Petrochemical Refining & Chemical Processing

Industrial teams handling hydrocarbon cracking face structural vulnerabilities like stress-corrosion cracking (SCC). Thanks to its balanced nickel-molybdenum synergy, Hastelloy alloy X plates and sheets offer superior protection against ambient organic acids and high-temperature pyrolysis operations.

Industrial Vacuum Furnaces

In structural heat-treating facilities, components face an endless mix of oxidizing, reducing, and neutral gases. Furnace components built from Hastelloy X cold rolled sheet frequently exceed 8,700 hours of continuous service at punishing temperatures like 2150°F (1177°C) without catastrophic oxidation failure.
