Through a unique age-hardening treatment, a dispersed γ'' phase (Ni3Nb) precipitates within the alloy as the primary strengthening phase, supplemented by γ' phase. This allows the alloy to maintain exceptional strength at temperatures up to 700°C and effectively resist creep deformation under long-term stress and high temperatures.

718 nickel Weldability and Post-Processing Properties

Unlike many other high-performance nickel-based alloys (such as Inconel 625), a significant advantage of 718 alloy is its insensitivity to weld cracking. Its slow precipitation hardening reaction allows sufficient time for stress relaxation in the welded material, preventing immediate cracking in the heat-affected zone. With appropriate post-weld heat treatment, its properties can be restored to levels close to those of the parent metal.

Seamless Pipe: Produced through processes such as piercing, extrusion, or drawing, without weld seams. Its uniform mechanical properties and excellent pressure-bearing capacity make it the preferred choice for high-temperature and high-pressure applications.

 

Welded Pipe: Produced from sheet material followed by welding. Cost is generally lower than seamless pipe and is suitable for applications requiring slightly lower pressure requirements but still requiring corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength.

 

Heat exchanger tubes: Require extremely high dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and wall thickness uniformity to ensure efficient heat transfer and structural integrity.

Melting: A dual process of vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting or vacuum consumable remelting is typically used to ensure extremely high purity, uniform chemical composition, and a dense as-cast structure.

 

Hot Working: This includes forging, extrusion, and hot rolling. In 718 alloy exhibits high resistance to deformation at high temperatures and is sensitive to temperature and deformation rate, requiring precise process control to prevent cracking and ensure uniform microstructure.

 

Cold Working: Cold rolling or cold drawing is used to achieve precise dimensions, thin walls, and excellent surface quality. Multiple intermediate annealing treatments are required during the process to eliminate work hardening and restore the material's plasticity.

 

Solution treatment: This treatment is performed at approximately 950-980°C to dissolve the strengthening elements into the matrix.

 

Aging treatment: This treatment is held at approximately 720°C for 8 hours, then furnace-cooled at approximately 50°C/hour to 620°C, held for an additional 8 hours, and finally air-cooled. This process precisely precipitates the γ'' and γ' strengthening phases, achieving peak strength.
