AISI Stainless Steel 316 Pipe VS SS304 Pipe

Stainless Steel 316 Welded and Seamless Pipe and Tube Manufacturer Supplier. Contact us to get free quote and sample!

SS316 stainless steel (UNS S31600), as a key member of the austenitic stainless steel family, occupies an important position in the field of engineering materials with its unique chemical composition and excellent performance. This alloy adds 2-3% molybdenum to conventional 304 stainless steel, significantly improving its tolerance in harsh environments.

s316 steel pipe vs s304 steel pipe corrosion resistance

The difference in corrosion resistance is most obvious in chloride-containing environments. 304 stainless steel is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in salt spray environments or seawater contact conditions, especially in stagnant or low-velocity areas. SS316, with its strengthening effect of molybdenum, has a more stable passivation film and significantly improved pitting potential.

Key Performance Comparison of SS316 vs. 304 Stainless Steel

Property SS316 304 Stainless Improvement
Molybdenum (%) 2–3% ≤0.75% ↑ Corrosion resistance
PREN 26–28 18–20 ↑ 30–40%
Yield Strength (MPa) 205–410 170–310 ↑ 15–25%
Max. Service Temp. 800–900°C 650–750°C ↑ 100–150°C

S31600 stainless steel pipe VS ss304 high-temperature performance comparison

In terms of high-temperature performance comparison, SS316 also shows significant advantages. When 304 stainless steel is used for a long time above 650°C, there will be a significant decrease in strength and accelerated oxidation. SS316, thanks to the stabilizing effect of molybdenum on grain boundaries, can maintain relatively stable performance within the temperature range of 800-900°C.

Stainless Steel 316

stainless steel 316 and s304 processing and manufacturing performance

Both materials belong to the austenitic stainless steel family and have similar forming and welding characteristics, but SS316 has some differences due to the presence of molybdenum. SS316 has a slightly higher cold work hardening tendency than 304, and requires greater forming force during deep stamping and cold bending; the hot working temperature range is also narrow (900-1200°C), and the temperature needs to be strictly controlled to avoid overheating.

ss316 tube and stainless steel 304 tube welding performance

In terms of welding performance, both can be welded by conventional methods, but the corrosion resistance of the heat-affected zone of SS316 after welding is more significantly reduced. If necessary, post-weld solution treatment (heating to 1010-1150°C and then rapid cooling) is required to restore corrosion resistance.
