Monel 400 alloy has become the main material in harsh industrial environments due to its unique chemical composition combination and excellent corrosion resistance. This nickel-copper alloy is based on about 67% nickel and 30% copper, supplemented by a small amount of iron (≤2.5%), manganese (≤2.0%), silicon (≤0.5%) and carbon (≤0.3%), forming a nearly perfect corrosion-resistant metal system.
Alloy 400 performance in acidic media
Monel 400 welded Pipe in Hydrofluoric acid (HF) field
Monel 400 is one of the few metal materials that can withstand hydrofluoric acid corrosion. Even in a hydrofluoric acid environment with a concentration of more than 60%, its annual corrosion rate can still be controlled below 0.05mm/a.
UNS N04400 Pipe in Sulfuric acid environment
In sulfuric acid with a concentration of less than 85%, especially in a dilute sulfuric acid environment with limited ventilation (concentration 10-15%), its corrosion resistance is significantly better than 316L stainless steel.
Monel N04400 Pipe in Hydrochloric acid environment
In the presence of oxidants (such as dissolved oxygen) in the hydrochloric acid system, a protective oxide film will form on its surface, and the corrosion rate can be controlled within the range of 0.1-0.5mm/a.

Alloy N04400 tube Advantages in alkaline and seawater environments
ASTM B165 400 Monel in Alkaline environment
Monel 400 exhibits excellent tolerance to hot concentrated alkali solutions. In a 50% boiling sodium hydroxide solution, its corrosion rate is less than 0.003mm/a, which is much better than carbon steel and cast iron.
Nickel Alloy 400 in Seawater environment
The annual corrosion rate of Monel 400 in flowing seawater is generally less than 0.025mm/a, and it exhibits excellent resistance to biofouling.
2.4360 Alloy 400 Resistance to special corrosion
400 Monel in Stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
Monel 400 has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments. In a simulated seawater environment, its SCC threshold value (KIscc) is more than 3 times that of 304 stainless steel.
400 alloy in Pitting and crevice corrosion
The pitting equivalent index (PREN) of Monel 400 is about 32, which is lower than that of duplex stainless steel, but it performs well in neutral media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the difference between Alloy 400 and Monel 400?
A: There is no technical difference. Monel 400 is a trademarked name, while Alloy 400 is the generic industrial name for the alloy defined by UNS N04400.
Q2: Does Alloy 400 pipe rust in seawater?
A: No. Alloy 400 is specifically designed for marine environments. It develops a protective thin film in seawater that resists pitting and crevice corrosion far better than most stainless steels.
Q3: What are the welding requirements for Monel 400 welded pipes?
A: Welding Alloy 400 requires specific filler metals like ERNiCu-7. It is essential to ensure the weld zone is clean to prevent embrittlement.
