An ASME B16.11 SW socket weld cap is a forged fitting designed to seal the end of a small-diameter pipe run. Unlike a butt-weld cap, which aligns end-to-end with the pipe, an SW cap features a recessed socket. The pipe slips inside this socket until it bottoms out against an internal shoulder, then it is pulled back slightly (approximately 1/16 inch) to allow for thermal expansion before a fillet weld joins the pipe's outer wall to the fitting lip.
We supply pipes, plates, round bars, and a comprehensive range of pipe fittings, flanges, and valves. Contact us now for free quotes and personalized product information.
Core Geometries and Dimensional Parameters
To ensure absolute interchangeability among international manufacturers, socket weld caps are engineered using strict dimensional parameters. The structural integrity of an SW cap is determined by four primary dimensions:
Socket Bore Diameter
The internal diameter of the socket must accommodate the external diameter (OD) of the incoming pipe with minimal clearance. A precision fit minimizes fluid turbulence at the joint and prevents excessive weld gap variations.
Socket Wall Thickness
The safety factor of a forged fitting depends on its wall thickness. ASME standards categorize socket weld fittings into specific pressure classes-primarily Class 3000, Class 6000, and Class 9000. The minimum wall thickness (C) along the body of the cap must meet or exceed the pressure-temperature rating of the matching pipe schedule.
Socket Depth
The socket depth dictates how far the pipe penetrates the fitting. Adequate depth ensures the joint possesses sufficient mechanical resistance against bending stresses, structural vibrations, and hydraulic shock.
Total Height / Length
The overall external length of the cap determines the spatial envelope required during system layout planning, ensuring terminal points do not interfere with structural beams, structural steel, or valve clearances.
Materials of Construction and Metallurgical Grades
Dimensional compliance must be paired with correct metallurgy. Forged components are selected to match the chemistry and tensile profile of the matching pipe material to prevent galvanic corrosion or thermal expansion cracking:
Carbon Steel: Manufactured to ASTM A105, these components provide structural reliability for standard ambient and high-temperature utility systems.
Low-Temperature Carbon Steel: Optimized under ASTM A350 LF2, these fittings maintain notch toughness down to –50°F (–45°C), making them ideal for midstream extraction environments.
Stainless Steel: Forged under ASTM A182 F316/316L, stainless grades prevent oxidation in corrosive chemical environments and resist localized pitting.
