The chemical composition of 317L stainless steel is centered on high chromium (18.0-20.0%), nickel (11.0-15.0%) and molybdenum (3.0-4.0%), while strictly controlling carbon content (≤0.03%) and impurity elements (such as phosphorus ≤0.045%, sulfur ≤0.030%).

Cutting and forming of S 317L Plate

It is recommended to use plasma cutting or laser cutting, and avoid carbon arc gouging to prevent oxidation. Progressive processes are required for cold forming to reduce work hardening.

 

Welding of ss317L

Tungsten inert gas welding (GTAW) or metal inert gas welding (GMAW) is preferred. AWS E317L or nickel-based alloy is recommended as filler material. The interlayer temperature of the weld needs to be controlled below 60°C to ensure the corrosion resistance of the weld.

Solution annealing (1010-1150°C) can eliminate processing stress and dissolve carbides, improving the toughness and corrosion resistance of the material.

Compared with 316L, 317L has a higher molybdenum content (3-4% vs. 2-3%), which significantly improves the chloride corrosion resistance, especially for seawater and acidic medium environments. Compared with 317LMN (containing higher molybdenum and nitrogen), 317L has lower cost and better welding performance, but slightly inferior high temperature strength. In terms of economy, the initial cost of 317L is about 20-30% higher than that of 316L, but the service life can be extended by more than 50% under severe working conditions, with significant comprehensive benefits.
