AL-6XN (UNS N08367) is a modern super-austenitic stainless steel. Within the metal material classification system, it is classified as a six-molybdenum grade super stainless steel due to its high molybdenum content of 6.0-7.0%, significantly exceeding that of conventional stainless steel. This highly alloyed austenitic stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance and a relatively reasonable cost, making it an economical alternative to nickel-based alloys in harsh corrosive environments.

AL-6XN has a density of 8.24 g/cm³, slightly higher than conventional stainless steels (such as 7.93 g/cm³ for 304 stainless steel), which is related to its high alloy content. Regarding thermal properties, it exhibits low thermal conductivity (approximately 11.9 W/(m·K) at 20°C), which means it has good thermal insulation properties, but requires careful attention to heat management during welding and heat treatment.

 

The material's coefficient of thermal expansion is 8.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C in the 20-100°C range, significantly different from carbon steel and requiring careful consideration in equipment design. AL-6XN also has a high melting point range (1370-1398°C), giving it potential advantages in high-temperature applications.

According to ASME standards, the allowable stress of AL-6XN is 40% higher than that of 316L and nearly double that of copper-nickel alloys. In chloride-containing media, AL-6XN exhibits resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion that exceeds that of conventional stainless steels. The enrichment of molybdenum and nitrogen in the passive film significantly enhances the film's stability in chloride environments, effectively preventing localized corrosion initiation.

In sodium chloride solutions, AL-6XN exhibits excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The high nickel content (24%) effectively prevents the initiation and propagation of chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, addressing the stress corrosion susceptibility commonly seen in chloride-containing environments with conventional austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 and 316).

AL-6XN exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in both acidic and alkaline environments. For example, in 60% sulfuric acid at temperatures below 80°C, its annual corrosion rate is less than 0.1 mm, significantly lower than that of conventional stainless steel. In the acidic environment of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) units, it withstands attack from mixed media of dilute sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid, and chlorides.
