ASTM B127 UNS N04400 Plate Mechanical Properties

What is ASTM B127 UNS N04400 plate?

When analyzing ASTM B127 UNS N04400 plate materials, understanding their mechanical properties is essential for ensuring their suitability for various applications. ASTM B127 is the standard specification for nickel-copper alloy (UNS N04400), commonly known as Monel 400, plates, sheets, and strips. Monel 400 is widely used in marine, chemical processing, and aerospace industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good ductility.

ASTM B127 Monel 400 Plate Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of ASTM B127 plates sheets are typically determined through standardized testing methods outlined in the ASTM specification. These properties include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. The values can vary depending on factors such as plate thickness, heat treatment, and manufacturing processes.

Tensile strength refers to the maximum stress a material can withstand before it fractures under tension. Yield strength is the stress at which a material begins to deform plastically, indicating its onset of permanent deformation. Elongation measures the percentage of deformation a material undergoes before it fractures and is indicative of its ductility. Hardness, often measured using Rockwell or Brinell scales, quantifies a material's resistance to indentation or scratching.

For ASTM B127 UNS N04400 plates, typical mechanical properties may include a tensile strength ranging from approximately 70 ksi to 100 ksi (483 MPa to 690MPa), a yield strength ranging from approximately 28 ksi to 55 ksi (193 MPa to 379 MPa), and elongation values ranging from 35% to 50%. Hardness values for 2.4360 Monel 400 plates may vary depending on the heat treatment condition.

Mechanical and Other Requirements

1. Mechanical Properties-The material shall conform to the requirements for mechanical properties prescribed.
2. Deep-Drawing and Spinning Quality Sheet and Strip- The material shall conform to the requirements for grain size and hardness properties prescribed in Table 2.
3.The mechanical properties of Table 1 do not apply to deep-drawing and spinning quality sheet and strip.

A Yield strength requirements do not apply to material under 0.020 in. (0.51 mm) in thickness.
B For Rockwell or equivalent hardness conversions see Hardness Conversion Tables E 140.
C Caution should be observed in using the Rockwell test on thin material, as the results may be affected by specimen thickness. For thicknesses under 0.050 in. (1.3 mm), the use of the Rockwell superficial or the Vickers hardness test is suggested.
D As-rolled plate may be given a stress-relieving heat treatment subsequent to final rolling.
E As-rolled plate specified " suitable for hot forming" shall be furnished from heats of known good hot-malleability characteristics. There are no applicable tensile or hardness requirements for such material.
F Not applicable for thickness under 0.010 in. (0.25 mm)
