ASTM B575-17
ASTM B575 Standard Specification for Low-Carbon Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum, Low-Carbon Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Copper, Low-Carbon Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Tantalum, Low-Carbon Nickel-Chromium-Molybdenum-Tungsten, and Low-Carbon Nickel-Molybdenum-Chromium.
ASTM B575 ASME SB 575 specification covers plate, sheet, and strip of low-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys (ASTM B575 UNS N10276, N06022, N06455, N06035, UNS N06058, UNS N06059), low carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum-copper alloy (ASME SB 575 UNS N06200) for use in general corrosive service.
ASTM B575 Material Specification:
ASTM B575 specifies four product forms: sheet, plate, coil, and strip. Among them, the ASTM B575 UNS N06022 plate is produced by a hot rolling process with thicker walls. Hastelloy C276 sheet is mainly produced by the process of cold rolling, and the wall thickness is relatively thin. Nickel alloy c22 strip is also produced by cold rolling, but in narrower widths and is supplied in coil form.
Sheet and Strip-Hot or cold rolled, solution annealed, and descaled unless solution anneal is performed in an atmosphere yielding a bright finish.
ASTM B575 Plate-Hot or cold rolled, solution annealed, and descaled.
Key Materials Covered Under ASTM B575
The ASTM B575 specification ensures strict control over mechanical properties and chemical compositions for several of the world's most corrosion-resistant superalloys. The most frequently requested grades include:
Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276 / 2.4819): Celebrated for outstanding performance in aggressive reducing and oxidizing media, including wet chlorine gas and hypochlorite solutions.
Hastelloy C22 (UNS N06022 / 2.4602): Offers enhanced overall corrosion resistance compared to C276, particularly protecting against localized pitting, crevice attacks, and stress corrosion cracking.
Hastelloy B3 (UNS N10675 / 2.4602): Features extreme resistance to pure hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures, backed by superior thermal stability during fabrication.
Hastelloy C2000 (UNS N06200): Incorporates deliberate copper additions to optimize performance in mixed acid streams containing both oxidizing and reducing conditions.
Dimensional Definitions: Plate, Sheet, and Strip
A common source of confusion for procurement teams is distinguishing between the different product forms regulated by the ASTM B575 standard. The specification divides them by precise thick-and-thin material definitions:
Plate: Solid flat-rolled material with a thickness of 3/16 inches (4.76 mm) and over, and a width greater than 10 inches (254 mm). Plates are heavily utilized for welding into large pressure vessel shells, heavy flanges, and tubesheets.
Sheet: Flat-rolled material with a thickness under 3/16 inches (4.76 mm) and a width of 24 inches (610 mm) and over. Commonly used for ducting linings, heat exchanger plates, and tank fabrications.
Strip: Cold-rolled material in coils or cut lengths, measuring under 3/16 inches (4.76 mm) in thickness and under 24 inches (610 mm) in total width.
Mandatory Testing and Quality Control
To achieve compliance with ASTM B575, all plates, sheets, and strips must pass a series of rigorous evaluations before leaving our factory floor:
Chemical Analysis: Every heat of steel is analyzed to confirm that critical elements like Carbon are kept to ultra-low limits (often less than 0.010%) to prevent intergranular precipitation during welding.
Mechanical Testing: Materials undergo tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation tests to confirm they meet the structural demands of high-pressure environments.
Dimensional Tolerances: Thickness, width, and flatness are verified against standard ASTM B906 general requirements to ensure trouble-free alignment during your workshop fabrication.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Ultrasonic testing is available upon request to detect any internal laminations or defects in thick plates destined for severe pressure applications.
