Stainless Steel 904L (UNS N08904,1.4539) plate stands out as a premium material designed to perform in the harshest of environments. Its high alloy content, which includes significant amounts of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, ensures superior resistance to a wide range of corrosive media. The combination of excellent mechanical strength, outstanding weldability, and robust corrosion resistance makes it indispensable in chemical processing, oil and gas production, marine applications, and beyond.

Manufacture Process of Stainless Steel 904L Plate
SS 904L Plate Cutting
Laser or plasma cutting is preferred for ss 904L steel plate cutting to ensure smooth cuts and small heat-affected zones. Mechanical cutting requires the use of carbide tools (such as CBN blades), the cutting speed is reduced to 1/3 of carbon steel, and sulfur- or chlorine-containing lubricants are used for sufficient cooling. After cutting, burrs and oxide layers must be thoroughly removed to avoid stress concentration.
UNS N08904 Plate Forming
Cold forming (bending, stamping) must be carried out in steps and properly annealed (solution treatment) to eliminate stress; hot forming requires the material to be preheated to 800-1000℃ to avoid exceeding 1150℃ to cause coarse grains. Mold design should use low friction coefficient materials (such as chrome-plated tool steel) to reduce wear during the forming process.
SS 1.4539 Plate Welding
TIG welding or MIG welding is recommended, with ER385 welding wire (high Ni/Cr/Mo content) to ensure SS 904L plate weld corrosion resistance. Use low current and fast welding speed process, and control the interlayer temperature below 150℃. After welding, pickling and passivation (nitric acid + hydrofluoric acid solution) are required, and if necessary, solution treatment at 1050-1100℃ is performed to eliminate stress.
Stainless Steel 904L Sheet Surface treatment
Pickling and passivation use 20-25% nitric acid + 2-5% hydrofluoric acid solution to remove oxide scale, mechanical polishing to Ra 0.8μm or less to avoid iron filings causing rust. In extreme environments, epoxy resin or PTFE can be coated to enhance protection.
SS N08904 Plate Heat treatment
Solution treatment requires water quenching after keeping at 1050-1100℃ for 1-2 hours to restore the corrosion resistance and ductility of the material. If the processing stress is large, stress relief annealing can be performed at 850-900℃ for 0.5-1 hour.
