A prefabricated pipe spool is a pre-assembled section of piping - straight pipe, fittings and flanges welded together in a workshop, delivered ready to bolt into the line. The product is defined by four things, and every serious RFQ names all four:
1. Spool Types: What Every Serious RFQ Names
| Spool type | Components | Typical use in the line |
| Straight spool | Pipe + flanges (or bevel ends) | Run piping, rack sections |
| Elbow spool | Pipe + LR/SR elbow + flange | Direction changes |
| Reducer spool | Concentric/eccentric reducer + flanges | Size transitions |
| Tee / branch spool | Tee + branch reinforcement + flanges | Takeoffs, instrument taps |
| Valve spool | Pipe + valve + mating flanges, shop-torqued | Control and isolation stations |
2. Materials and the Standards That Bind Them
Every component in a spool carries its own material standard - the pipe, the fittings and the flanges never share one standard number. This mapping is what separates a weldable quote from a paperwork mess:
| Material family | Pipe | Fittings | Flanges |
| 304L / 316L | ASTM A312 | A403 WP304L/316L | A182 F304L/F316L |
| Duplex 2205 | A790 S31803/S32205 | A815 WP-S/WPW-S | A182 F51/F60 |
| Super Duplex 2507 | A790 S32750 | A815 WP-S32750 | A182 F53/F55 |
| 254SMO | B677 seamless / B673 welded | B462 | B564 N08904-class |
| Inconel 625 | B443/B444 | B366 | B564 N06625 |
| Monel 400 | B165 | B366 | B564 N04400 |
Fabrication and assembly execution reference ASME B31.3 for process piping and ASME Section IX qualified welding procedures. Copper-nickel and titanium spools are quoted on request.
3. Dimension and Fit-Up Tolerance Matrix
Dimensional control is the whole reason to buy prefabricated instead of field-assembling. Indicative program:
| Parameter | Program range | Control reference |
| Pipe OD | DN15 – DN600 (1/2" – 24"); welded spools to DN1500 on request | ASME B36.19 (SS) / B36.10 |
| Wall | Sch 5S – Sch 80S standard; heavier by design calc | Nominal wall per schedule |
| Face-to-face / overall length | Per isometric; ±3 mm typical for DN≤200, ±5 mm DN>200 | ASME B31.3 fit-up practice |
| Flange face finish | RF serrated; FF/RTJ on request | ASME B16.5 |
| Bolt-hole orientation | Two-bolt / four-bolt orientation fixed per drawing | Isometric |
Fit-up note worth insisting on in Gulf project specs: overall-length tolerance across a multi-weld spool accumulates per weld. A 6-weld spool with loose workshop tolerance can drift 10+ mm and forces site rework. We cut and weld to accumulated-tolerance budgets stated on the iso, not to per-segment defaults.
4. Material Selection Boundaries - What We Will Tell You Not to Buy
A spool quote should come with material advice attached, because the spool is where mixed materials meet:
- 316L spools in chloride service above ~50 °C with crevices (flange faces are built-in crevices): expect to revisit. 254SMO or 2507 spools are the usual upgrade path.
- Duplex 2205 spools in stagnant seawater: weak point is the flange-face crevice, not the weld. If the line sees stagnant warm seawater, 2507 or 254SMO is the defensible spec.
- Nickel alloy spools (625, Monel 400, C276) are ordered when the line spec calls for them - we do not upsell a full spool into nickel when only one component contacts the aggressive medium; a properly welded transition joint often does the job for less.
- Weld filler selection is part of the product. 2507 spools are typically welded with ER2594 or ERNiCrMo-3; 254SMO with ERNiCrMo-3; 316L with 316L-class filler with controlled ferrite. Filler certs accompany the spool package.
5. Indicative Pricing (Ex-Works, Fabricated and Certified)
Spool pricing = pipe material cost + fittings + fabrication hours + certification. Ballpark bands for a standard elbow spool (one elbow + two RF weld-neck flanges, one weld, NDE included):
| Configuration | Indicative band |
| 316L, DN100 | USD 400–800/spool |
| Duplex 2205, DN100 | USD 900–1,600/spool |
| Super Duplex 2507, DN100 | USD 1,800–3,200/spool |
| 254SMO, DN100 | USD 2,000–3,600/spool |
| Nickel alloy (625/400), DN100 | Quoted per isometric, metal-indexed |
Scaling is roughly linear with diameter and rises with weld count - each weld adds NDE, filler control and documentation. A 48-spool package like the Abu Dhabi RFQ above prices meaningfully per-tonne better than single-spool orders because one fabrication campaign amortizes setup across all pieces.
FAQ
Q1: What do you need from us to quote a prefabricated pipe spool package?
Issued-for-fabrication isometrics (or dimensioned sketches), material spec, end connections, and any project NDE/certification requirements. Per-isometric quoting is standard for us.
Q2: Can you fabricate duplex and super duplex spools with qualified procedures?
Yes - welding procedures qualified to ASME Section IX, with filler selection matched to the grade (ER2594/ERNiCrMo-3 for 2507/254SMO class), and weld maps included in the documentation package.
Q3: How is dimensional accuracy controlled across multi-weld spools?
To accumulated-tolerance budgets stated on the isometric. Face-to-face overall tolerance is budgeted across the weld sequence rather than left to per-segment defaults.
Q4: What certifications come with a spool package?
Material certificates for every component (EN 10204 3.1 typical), weld map, NDE reports, and pressure test records where specified. 3.2 third-party witness is quoted on request.
Q5: Do you ship spools with flanges bolted or loose?
Both are available; flanged spools ship with flange-face protectors as standard, and bolted flange pairs are supplied loose unless shop-torqued valve spools are specified.
