SCH 40S A403 WP304/304L SMLS (Seamless) Straight Tees are a 300 series austenitic stainless steel known for excellent corrosion resistance. SS 304/304L contains approximately 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel. Alloy 304L is a low carbon version of 304 with a maximum carbon content of 0.03% and is more resistant to intergranular corrosion. The wall thickness of SCH 40S makes it more capable of handling operations such as chemical processing, water treatment, etc.
ASME B16.9: This standard governs the overall dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48. A "straight tee" indicates that the branch diameter matches the run diameter exactly.
ASTM A403 / ASME SA403: This specification covers the material requirements for wrought austenitic stainless steel piping fittings. The WP designation stands for "Wrought Pipe," indicating the fitting is formed from seamless or welded pipe blanks.
HT PIPE is a well-known stockist and exporter. We are a alloy 304/304l material supplier with 15+ export experience. We not only provide pipes, plate, round bars, but also pipe fittings, flanges, etc. Contact us for more information and prices for free.
The Advantages of Dual WP304/304L Certification
Choosing dual-certified WP304/304L fittings combines the distinct metallurgical benefits of both grades into a single component:
WP304 (UNS S30400): Provides excellent baseline mechanical strength, toughness, and atmospheric corrosion resistance.
WP304L (UNS S30403): Features a restricted low-carbon profile (0.03% max). This effectively prevents chromium carbide precipitation during welding, preserving the corrosion resistance of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) without requiring post-weld annealing.
Straight Tee SMLS (Seamless)
- Tee: Straight tees have three equally sized outlets and are used to split or connect two flows at a 90-degree angle within a piping system.
- Seamless Construction (SMLS): Seamless fittings have no welds and are preferred over welded fittings for high pressure environments.

Stainless Steel 304/304L Mechanical Properties
- Yield Strength: Approx. 205 MPa (30 ksi)
- Tensile Strength: Approx. 515 MPa (75 ksi)
- Elongation: 40% (minimum)
- Hardness: Max. 201 HBW
ASTM A403 WP304/304L Thermal Properties
- High Temperature Properties: Suitable for temperatures up to approx. 870°C (1600°F).
- Low Temperature Properties: 304/304L maintains good toughness at very low temperatures.
- Thermal Expansion: 304/304L has a relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion compared to carbon steel.
Weldability
Both AISI 304 and 304L can be welded by standard methods (TIG, MIG) with or without filler material.

Technical FAQ
Q1: What does "Straight Tee" mean compared to a "Reducing Tee"?
A1: A Straight Tee (also known as an Equal Tee) means all three connection ends-the branch line and the two main run lines-have the exact same nominal pipe size (NPS) and wall thickness. A Reducing Tee features a branch line that is smaller in diameter than the main run line.
Q2: Why specify SCH 40S instead of standard Schedule 40?
A2: The "S" suffix denotes stainless steel dimensions according to ASME B36.19M. For sizes between 1/2" and 10", SCH 40 and SCH 40S share identical wall thicknesses. However, for sizes 12" and larger, standard SCH 40 wall thickness increases, while SCH 40S remains capped at a standard thickness (9.52 mm), saving material weight where high-carbon steel pressure limits aren't required.
Q3: Are these tees supplied with material test certifications?
A3: Yes. All ASTM A403 WP304/304L fittings supplied by industrial stockists must be accompanied by an EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC) confirming exact heat numbers, chemical composition analysis, tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hydrostatic or non-destructive test results.
