What is the meaning of Schedule 40 pipe?

In the realm of industrial piping, "schedule" refers to the thickness of a pipe wall. The numeric value in "Schedule 40" specifically represents the pressure rating of the pipe. In this case, the pipe is designed to withstand a pressure of 40 pounds per square inch (PSI). Therefore, Schedule 40S pipes are well-suited for applications where moderate pressure conditions are present.

Specifically, Schedule 40 steel pipe is a designation used to indicate a certain standard thickness for pipes. In the context of steel pipes, Schedule 40S denotes a medium thickness, and it is one of the most common schedules used in various applications. This can be particularly advantageous in scenarios where a sturdy and cost-effective piping solution is required, such as in water systems, plumbing, or general infrastructure projects.

Based on the NPS and schedule of a pipe, the pipe outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness can be obtained from reference tables such as those below, which are based on ASME B36.10M and B36.19M.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Is Schedule 40 pipe galvanized?

Schedule 40 refers to the thickness, not the coating. However, SCH 40 pipes can be galvanized (zinc-coated) to prevent rust or left as "black steel" for oil and gas applications.

2. Can Schedule 40 steel pipe be welded?

Yes. Carbon steel SCH 40 pipe is highly weldable using standard methods like TIG, MIG, or stick welding, making it ideal for structural frames.

3. What is the difference between SCH 40 and SCH 80?

The main difference is the wall thickness. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall, allowing it to handle higher internal pressures than Schedule 40.
