What Is the Stabilization Heat Treatment SS 347?

SS 347 UNS S34700 Pipe

Overview of the Stabilization Heat Treatment for SS 347:

1. Solution Annealing:

The first step in stabilization heat treatment is solution annealing. This involves heating the AISI 347 stainless steel material to a temperature typically in the range of 1900°F to 2050°F (1038°C to 1121°C). The 1.4550 material steel is then held at this elevated temperature for a specific period, allowing the chromium carbides to dissolve back into the matrix of the stainless steel.

2. Rapid Quenching:

After the type 347 stainless steel material has been held at the solution annealing temperature for the required time, it is rapidly quenched. Rapid quenching helps lock the carbon and nitrogen back into a solid solution within the stainless steel, preventing the reformation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries.

3. Stabilization Annealing:

Following solution annealing and quenching, the 347 ss material material is subjected to a stabilization annealing process. This step is crucial for SS 347 due to its niobium (columbium) content. The S34700 material is heated to a temperature typically in the range of 1550°F to 1650°F (843°C to 899°C) and then allowed to cool slowly. This stabilizes the material by promoting the precipitation of niobium carbides instead of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries.

4. Cooling:

The stabilized SA 347 stainless steel material is allowed to cool slowly. Slow cooling helps in achieving the desired microstructure and ensures the formation of niobium carbides, which enhance the corrosion resistance of the 1.4550 stainless steel.

SS 347 is an austenitic stainless steel that contains niobium (Nb) to provide excellent corrosion resistance. The stabilization heat treatment of stainless steel 347 involves a process called solution annealing or stabilization annealing. It is essential to help maintain the corrosion resistance of 347 material, especially in environments exposed to high temperatures. Our suppliers can provide 347 stainless steel pipes, plates, fittings, flanges, etc. Contact us for more information and a free quote.

Benefits of Stabilization Heat Treatment with SS 347

1. Increased Corrosion Resistance: By preventing the formation of chromium carbides, the risk of intergranular corrosion is significantly reduced. This, in turn, increases the overall corrosion resistance of the material.

2. Improved Weldability: Welding can cause sensitization in austenitic stainless steels, leading to intergranular corrosion. Stabilization heat treatment minimizes this effect, making SS 347 easier to weld.

3. Enhanced Durability: By reducing the risk of corrosion, SS 347 becomes more durable, with a longer lifespan and reduced maintenance costs.
