A buyer in the Gulf ordered 316L for a produced-water line running at 60 °C. Fourteen months later the pipe was leaking at three welds. The specification was not careless - 316L is a good stainless steel. It was simply the wrong grade for that service.
The opposite mistake costs money just as fast. A buyer specifies super duplex 2507 for a line that duplex 2205 would handle, then quietly pays 60–80% more per meter than the project needed.

Three Grades, Three Price Points
If you remember only one thing, remember this: these three grades are not "better" versions of each other. They are different tools for different jobs.
316L is the workhorse. It handles clean, low-chloride process lines, potable water, and general industrial piping at a price everyone can live with. In chlorides above roughly 1,000 ppm, or above 40–45 °C in seawater, its life gets short fast.
2205 (duplex) is the sweet spot. Roughly twice the yield strength of 316L and a PREN around 35 means it survives chloride-heavy service that kills 316L, at a price most projects still approve.
2507 (super duplex) is the heavy lifter. PREN 42+ and double the strength of 2205 make it the go-to for seawater, offshore, and high-pressure sour circuits - and the price reflects that.

The yield strength column matters more than most buyers realize. 2205 is about 2.6 times stronger than 316L, so for pressure-rated lines the wall can come down 30–40%. That thinner wall eats part of the price premium - sometimes the duplex upgrade ends up costing almost nothing per meter of installed pipe.
Which One for Your Service?

Three rules of thumb from this table:
If the fluid is clean and cool, 316L. Do not let anyone sell you duplex for a potable water line.
If chlorides are present and the temperature is above 40 °C, start at 2205 and only move up if pressure or H2S demands it.
If the service is seawater, offshore, or clearly sour with chlorides, 2507 - and budget for it from the start, because the alternative is replacing the line twice inside 25 years.
Three Buying Decisions from Real Projects
Desalination plant intake line, Arabian Gulf
Seawater at 35 °C with 21,000 ppm chlorides and 25-year design life. 316L pits within months in this service. 2205 handles it but sits close to its critical pitting temperature in summer peaks. 2507 gives a 40 °C safety margin. On this project the buyer specified 2507 for the intake and 2205 for the downstream brine line - the right split, and a good example of why "one grade for the whole plant" is usually the expensive option.
Produced water line, onshore oil field
60 °C, 8,000 ppm chlorides, low H2S. The original spec said 316L and the line failed in 14 months. 2205 at 1.9× the price of 316L lasts 25 years. The upgrade pays for itself in the first replacement cycle - which is why every operator we work with in this service has moved to 2205 as standard.
Chemical plant, moderate service
30 °C, 300 ppm chlorides, no pressure surprises. 316L, full stop. Specifying duplex here would tie up budget that belongs elsewhere on the project. The most expensive pipe is the pipe you did not need.
FAQ
When is 316L actually good enough?
When the fluid is clean and cool - below roughly 40 °C and 1,000 ppm chlorides, with no sour service. Potable water, cooling loops, and general industrial lines are classic 316L jobs.
How much more do 2205 and 2507 cost than 316L?
Roughly 1.8–2.2× for 2205 and 2.6–3.2× for 2507 per meter, before wall-thickness savings. Because duplex grades are about 2.6× stronger, the installed cost gap is smaller than the per-meter gap - often 20–30% for 2205 vs 316L.
Is 2507 always better than 2205?
No. 2507 earns its premium in seawater, offshore, and high-H2S service. In moderate chloride service 2205 delivers the same 25-year life for less money. Specifying 2507 where 2205 suffices is over-specification - the kind that gets budgets questioned.
How do I know the pipe is really 2205 and not a cheaper substitute?
Re-calculate PREN from the MTR, run PMI (XRF) on delivered pieces, and check ferrite content per ASTM A923. All three are cheap. If a supplier hesitates on any of them, that is the answer.
Is seamless better than welded for duplex?
For high-pressure and sour service, yes - seamless removes the weld seam as the weakest point. For lower-pressure lines, welded duplex from qualified strip is widely accepted and cheaper. The grade decision matters more than the seam decision in most projects.
