AISI 310S is intended for high temperature applications in oxidizing atmospheres up to 1100°C. The steel may also be used in slightly oxidizing atmospheres, nitriding, carburizing and sulfiding, and thermal cycling conditions, but the temperature must be reduced.
SS 310S Temperature Limits:
1. Typically, S31008 stainless steel can withstand continuous service temperatures up to 1150°C (2100°F) in air and oxidizing atmospheres.
2. In reducing or inert atmospheres, the temperature limits may be higher, reaching 1200°C (2190°F) for short periods of time.
Environmental Gas Chemistry & Localized Scaling Limits
High-temperature corrosion kinetics vary significantly based on sulfur contamination and localized oxygen pressure. Use the following design constraints when sizing 310S heat-resistant tubes:
Oxidizing Environments (Low Sulfur ≤2 g/m³): Safe for continuous deployment up to 1050°C (1922°F), with a brief spike ceiling of 1100°C (2012°F).
Oxidizing Environments (High Sulfur > 2 g/m³): The maximum safe operating threshold drops to 950°C (1742°F) due to accelerated sulfidation pathways along the chromium oxide layer.
Low-Oxygen/Reducing Media (Low Sulfur ≤2 g/m³): Capable of sustaining structural integrity up to a maximum temperature of 1000°C (1832°F).
Nitriding or Carburizing Gas Atmospheres: Temperature exposure must be strictly controlled between 850°C and 950°C (1562°F–1742°F) to prevent excessive embrittlement from carbon or nitrogen absorption.
ndustrial Deployment & Core Applications
Because of these unique gas-specific heat limits, ASME SA312 Grade 310S materials are widely implemented in critical furnace and process operations:
- Radiant heat protection tubes and thermal steam boiler components.
- Combustion chambers, thermo-well housings, and exhaust manifolds.
- Catalyst grid recovery systems within chemical refineries.
- Multi-hearth furnace liners and muffle systems.
What is the Melting Point of SS 310s Stainless Steel?
The approximate melting point of 310s stainless steel pipe is approximately 1400-1450°C (2550-2640°F). This melting point may vary slightly depending on the specific composition and impurities present in the alloy.
