Difference Between Nickel Alloy 20 And Nickel 200
Nickel Alloy 20, also known as Carpenter 20 or Alloy 20, is a nickel-iron-chromium austenitic alloy with excellent corrosion resistance in various acid environments. This nickel 200 high nickel content provides exceptional corrosion resistance in various environments, including reducing conditions, alkaline solutions, and neutral chloride-containing solutions.

1. Composition:
- Nickel Alloy 20 UNS N08020: Typical composition (% by weight) includes approximately 32-38% nickel, 19-21% chromium, 2-3% copper, 2-3% molybdenum, 3-4% iron, 0.07% maximum carbon, 2.0-3.0% manganese, 0.045% maximum phosphorus, 0.035% maximum sulfur, and trace amounts of silicon and niobium.
- Nickel 200 UNS N02200: Nickel 200 is a commercially pure nickel alloy with a minimum nickel content of 99.0%. Its composition typically includes 99.6% minimum nickel, 0.40% maximum iron, 0.35% maximum manganese, 0.15% maximum carbon, 0.10% maximum silicon, 0.010% maximum sulfur, and 0.010% maximum copper.
2. Corrosion Resistance:
- 2.4660 Alloy 20: Offers excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, and chloride-containing solutions. It also exhibits good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion.
- 2.4066 Nickel 200: Provides excellent corrosion resistance in alkaline environments and to alkalis, but it is less resistant to acidic and chloride-containing solutions compared to Nickel Alloy 20. It is susceptible to attack in oxidizing and reducing environments.
3. Mechanical Properties:
- Carpenter 20cb-3: Typically exhibits a tensile strength of 80,000 psi (550 MPa) minimum, a yield strength of 35,000 psi (240 MPa) minimum, and an elongation of 30% minimum in the annealed condition. Its mechanical properties can vary depending on factors such as heat treatment and product form.
- 2.4060 Nickel 200: Has excellent mechanical properties, including a tensile strength of 55,000-75,000 psi (380-520 MPa), a yield strength of 15,000-30,000 psi (105-210 MPa), and an elongation of 40-55% in the annealed condition. Its high ductility makes it suitable for various forming and fabrication processes.
4. Applications:
Incoloy Alloy 20 and nickel 200 is available in various forms such as sheets, plates, bars, pipes, flanges and fittings, offering versatility for different applications.
- Nickel Alloy 20: Commonly used in chemical processing equipment (e.g., reactors, vessels, and pumps), food processing machinery, pharmaceutical equipment, and storage tanks where resistance to corrosive chemicals and high temperatures is required.
- Nickel 200: Widely employed in industries such as electronics, aerospace, and chemical processing for applications including electronic components, batteries, heat exchangers, and caustic handling equipment.
