SS 310S vs 304 & 316L Stainless Steel Pipe: High-Temp Comparison | HT PIPELINE

310S Stainless Steel Pipe

Chemical Composition:

SS 310S: TP310S is an austenitic stainless steel alloy containing high levels of chromium (24-26%) and nickel (19-22%), and small amounts of carbon (up to 0.08%). It also contains a higher proportion of silicon (1.5-2.5%) than 304.

SS 304: This is also an austenitic stainless steel alloy, but is lower in Chromium (18-20%) and Nickel (8-10.5%) than 310S. The carbon content in SS 304 is usually limited to a maximum of 0.08%.

Temperature Resistance:
SS 310S: 310s stainless steel pipe has excellent high-temperature resistance, the maximum operating temperature is about 1100°C (2010°F). It can withstand thermal cycling and is commonly used in applications such as furnace components, heat exchangers, and radiant tubes.

SS 304: Although 304 stainless steel pipe can withstand moderately high temperatures, its maximum operating temperature is lower than SS 310S pipe. It is typically used in applications that do not require exposure to extreme heat.

Strength and Hardness:

SS 310S: Higher strength and hardness compared to SS 304 due to higher alloy content. This makes SS 310S more resistant to deformation and mechanical stress, providing better structural integrity under demanding conditions.

SS 304: Although it has slightly lower strength and hardness compared to SS 310S, SS 304 still has good mechanical properties suitable for most applications.

Key Technical & Operational Differences

Maximum Service Temperature & Oxidation Limits

SS 310S Pipes: Specifically engineered for continuous high-temperature service. The dense chromium and silicon content creates a tenacious, self-healing protective oxide layer. It exhibits superior scaling and oxidation resistance in continuous air service up to 1100°C (2012°F).

SS 304 / 316L Pipes: These grades suffer rapid scaling and severe degradation of mechanical properties if exposed to extreme heat. Their practical continuous service limit under thermal stress is typically restricted to 800°C–870°C (1472°F–1598°F).

Weldability & Carbide Precipitation Control

The "S" designation in SS 310S signifies a controlled low-carbon chemistry (0.08% maximum). When welding thick-walled ASME SA312 piping networks, this lower carbon threshold suppresses dangerous chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries. This preserves the structural integrity of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and eliminates the need for post-weld heat treatment in most field installations.

Specialized Corrosion Resistance Profile

High-Temperature Gases: SS 310S provides outstanding resistance to sulfur-bearing atmospheres, moderate carburization, and reducing environments typical of heavy industrial furnace operations.

Aqueous & Chloride Media: For cold or ambient fluid lines containing chlorides or highly acidic compounds, SS 316L remains superior due to its 2-3% Molybdenum addition, which specifically fights pitting and crevice corrosion.

Industrial Application Mapping

Choosing the correct industrial grade depends entirely on the operational temperature parameters and the chemical makeup of the conveyed media:

Deploy SS 310S Pipes For: Furnace production lines, radiant heater tubes, high-temperature heat exchangers, fluid bed combustors, exhaust systems, chemical retorts, and thermal processing facilities operating continuously above 850°C.

Deploy SS 304 / 316L Pipes For: Commercial food and beverage processing, cryogenic fluid storage, municipal water treatment systems, architectural structures, and low-to-medium temperature chemical process piping.
