316's higher carbon ceiling (0.08% vs 316L's 0.03%) gives it measurably better yield and tensile strength at elevated temperatures. At 400°C, 316 retains roughly 75% of its room-temperature yield strength. 316L drops to around 65-70%. That gap widens further above 500°C. For high-temperature service, that translates directly into thinner walls, less material, and lower cost on large-bore headers.

Where 316 makes sense
Superheated steam headers and boiler blowdown (300–550°C): 316's strength advantage matters here. ASME B31.3 allows slightly thinner schedules.
Power plant auxiliary piping: condensate return, feedwater preheaters, instrument air - shop-fabricated spools with controlled welding, minimal field welds.
Refinery furnace loop piping (200–400°C): typically spool-piece fabrication, controlled welding parameters, high-temp design basis.
Pressure vessel nozzle piping in reformer and hydrocracker service (250–450°C): wall calculations driven by temperature-adjusted allowable stress favor 316.
High-pressure/high-temp headers above 10 MPa in ammonia or PE plant service.
