Fabrication and Welding Best Practices

Because Hastelloy C22 hot-rolled plate is heavily alloyed, it behaves differently under tools and torches than standard 316L stainless steel.

Machining and Cutting: Due to its high work-hardening rate, thermal cutting should ideally be executed via high-precision waterjet or plasma arc processes. When machining, use heavy, rigid machinery, sharp carbide tooling, and a constant feed rate to prevent the tool from riding on the surface and hardening the metal work layer.

Welding Methods: C22 plate displays excellent weldability using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), or Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). It is recommended to use an identical Alloy C22 filler metal (ERNiCrMo-10 wire or ENiCrMo-10 electrodes) to maintain uniform corrosion resistance across the weld bead and the surrounding base plate.

Contamination Control: Intergranular contamination from iron, zinc, or copper can cause weld embrittlement. Fabricators must maintain strict clean-room conditions, use dedicated stainless steel wire brushes, and thoroughly degrease plate edges using non-chlorinated solvents before striking an arc.
