Selecting an Inconel 600 plate involves matching its chemistry against specific chemical threats. Its dual-element dominance (Nickel + Chromium) creates a versatile barrier across two distinct chemical landscapes:

Reducing vs. Oxidizing Environments

In reducing media-where oxygen is scarce and acids donate hydrogen ions-the high nickel content prevents the metal from dissolving. It displays excellent resistance to organic acids (such as fatty acid processing), caustic alkalies, and dry halogens (chlorine and fluorine gases).

Conversely, in highly oxidizing solutions like nitric acid concentrations, the chromium content steps in to build a protective barrier. While it is not recommended for strongly oxidizing hot acids due to potential localized attack, it provides an exceptional operational balance in mixed-gas environments containing both oxygen and reducing gases.

Nitriding Atmosphere Resistance

A standout characteristic of Alloy 600 is its performance within high-temperature nitriding environments. In furnaces where ammonia is cracked to infuse nitrogen into component surfaces, standard steel components quickly absorb nitrogen, forming brittle iron nitrides. Inconel 600 completely resists nitrogen absorption up to high thermal ranges, ensuring a significantly longer service life for furnace hardware, baskets, and retorts.

Cold and Hot Forming Parameters

Hot Working: Structural forging or heavy forming of thick plate sections should occur within the 1600°F to 2250°F (870°C to 1230°C) window. Critical Guardrail: Avoid any structural mechanical work between 1200°F and 1600°F (649°C to 871°C), as the alloy exhibits a localized low-ductility zone within this range where tearing can occur.

Cold Forming: The material mimics the behavior of standard heavy-gauge austenitic stainless steels during cold rolling or bending but demands higher machine power due to a rapid work-hardening rate.
