Fabricability and Workshop Guidelines

Cold Forming and Machining

Inconel 601 sheets readily undergo standard cold-forming methods, including shearing, blanking, and deep drawing. However, due to the high nickel content, its work-hardening rate is significantly faster than that of standard austenitic stainless steels. Heavy-duty forming equipment, sharp tooling, and optimized feed rates are critical to prevent immediate glazed work-surfaces.

Welding Protocols

Alloy 601 exhibits excellent weldability across common processes, including Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG). Preheating or post-weld heat treatments (PWHT) are generally not required.

To maintain maximum oxidation resistance along the heat-affected zone (HAZ), it is best practice to use matching composition Alloy 601 filler metal or high-performance RA 602 CA® welding consumables, which offer enhanced creep resistance at extreme temperatures.
