ASTM A240 standard Scope:
ASTM A240 standard is a widely used specification for stainless steel plates and sheets. It covers chromium, chromium-nickel, and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plates, sheets, and strips for pressure vessels and for general applications.
ASTM A240 Stainless Steel Plate Grades
ASTM A240 specification also provides for various grades of stainless steel, including austenitic, ferritic, and duplex grades. Austenitic grades include 904L, 254SMO, 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and 321H. Ferritic grades include 409, 410S, and 430. Duplex grades include S31803, S32205 and S32750.
ASTM A240 Plate Surface Finish
In addition, ASTM A240 specifies the surface finish of the stainless steel plate and sheet. ASTM A240 stainless steel plate surface finishes range from hot rolled to cold rolled and can include a variety of finishes such as 2D, 2B, and #4.
ASTM A240 Standard Specification
ASTM A240/ ASME SA240 is used to determine the standard specification for the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the stainless steel sheet. For Chemical composition, the Composition of carbon, manganese, phosphorous, sulfur, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper, and other elements are determined. ASTM A240 also specifies the mechanical properties of the material, such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation. Another important aspect of ASTM A240 is its testing requirements.
