ss254smo resistance to localized corrosion
Resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion: High molybdenum and high nitrogen content give it extremely strong resistance in chloride-rich environments such as seawater, salt water, chlorine bleach, chemical process fluids, etc., far better than 316L, 317L, and even better than many duplex stainless steels.
Resistance to stress corrosion cracking: In typical chloride stress corrosion cracking environments (such as warm seawater, salt spray), it performs better than 304/316 and is close to or better than duplex steel.
s254smo overall corrosion resistance
Resistance to uniform corrosion: Excellent performance in a wide range of acidic media, especially in environments such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, and acetic acid containing chloride ions. The addition of copper significantly enhances its applicability in dilute sulfuric acid.
Intergranular corrosion resistance: Ultra-low carbon content and reasonable composition design enable it to maintain good intergranular corrosion resistance after welding or sensitization.

uns s31254 processing and welding performance
Formability: Although the strength is high, it still has the cold work hardening characteristics of austenitic steel and can be cold formed (note that the work hardening rate is faster than 304/316, and higher power or intermediate annealing may be required).
Weldability: Generally good, conventional austenitic stainless steel welding methods (TIG, MIG, SAW, SMAW) can be used. It is recommended to use matching super austenitic stainless steel welding materials (such as 625 type nickel-based welding materials can also be used in critical occasions). Heat input needs to be controlled to avoid the reduction of toughness in the heat affected zone of welding due to precipitation of σ phase (although its precipitation tendency is lower than that of duplex steel).
when do you need 254smo stainless steel?
- High concentration of chloride ions in the environment (especially warm environment)
- Gap conditions
- Medium acidic (especially reducing acid)
- If conventional stainless steels (316L, 317L, 904L) or duplex steels (2205, 2507) fail too quickly
- High requirements for material strength and toughness
- Equipment critical and will downtime be costly
