Difference between alloy 825 and Hastelloy C276

Incoloy 825 Material Properties

Alloy 825, also known as Incoloy 825 UNS 08825, is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additional elements such as molybdenum, copper, and titanium. It has excellent resistance to corrosion in various environments, including sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and seawater. This alloy is often chosen for equipment used in the desalination industry, as it can withstand the high salinity levels of seawater without breaking down.

 

Hastelloy C276 Material Properties

On the other hand, Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy that offers superior resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, including strong acids, chlorides, and oxidizing agents. It is often used in chemical processing industries where harsh chemicals are present, such as in the production of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid. Alloy C276 UNS N10276 is also used in applications where high temperatures or high-pressure levels are present, such as in heat exchangers or reactor vessels.

 

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

One of the primary differences between these two alloys is their resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC). While Incoloy 825 has excellent resistance to SCC in most environments, it may not be the best choice when working with high levels of chlorides. In comparison, Hastelloy C276 is highly resistant to chloride-induced SCC, making it an ideal choice for applications where chlorides are present.

 

Thermal Stability

Another key difference between these alloys is their thermal stability. Alloy 825 has a maximum operating temperature of 550°C (1020°F), while alloy c276 can withstand temperatures up to 1,050°C (1,922°F). This makes the latter alloy a better choice for applications where high-temperature exposure is likely.
